Fine way to talk of a local beauty spot. Incidentally, an undercover Vault regular was handed Jack's snazzy business card by a kindly builder this morning. I think we can safely say that any pretence of a 'Women's Museum' has been consigned to the dustbin.

The Women's Death Brigade have since claimed responsibility for the smashed windows, and I believe them! It's possible the story could run for a few more days yet, so, to free up our "news" section for actual news, have shifted it here because, going by their forums, even many Ripperologists are agreed that the "Museum"/ Gift Shop is a CRIME, and those fellows rarely agree on anything. To mark this prestigious occasion, a bunch of links to other Saucy Jack-related junk cluttering the Vault. There may even be more. It opened for business this morning (Sunday). A strangely muted affair given the tensions of the past week. The "Keep Calm: I'm A Ripperologist" t-shirts, which I'd initially dismissed as a mischievous figment of the anarchist protester's imaginations, are very much in evidence, so "glorified gift shop" criticism not too far wide of the mark. Was genuinely taken aback by the admission charge, which, according to the amiable security guard I spoke to, is "£10 adults, £6 children," incredibly reasonable by London's extortionate standards. In case you'd not guessed, I've no intention of ever setting foot inside the place, but should anyone decide to sample what's on offer, would be interested in your verdict. In other news, the local 24 hour glazier has had a busy week. Chrissie Demant One terrible thing I learned from the JTRM site is that the PM's wife, Samantha "Austerity? I'll have a new £1 million kitchen, ta" Cameron, is Edith Bagnold's great-grand-daughter. And to think I persuaded my poor wife to provide an illustration for The Amorous Ghost (which now, obviously, I deny ever having liked)! Haven't the heart to tell her. She'll go spare.

It will be interesting to see if the pre-opening protests now die down. Also, I suspect, like the Ripper tours, a goodly proportion of its patrons may well be foreign tourists.

I wouldn't bet on it, Rip. The local anarcho's have added the Museum protest to their busy Wednesday night schedule. Am planning to attend tonight's demo in a Vault on-the-spot reporter capacity. I don't think there's been a day in past week where the shop front has not required emergency repairs. This morning, the mural was spray painted a fetching shade of purple. Since opening, it's not looked busy when I've passed it (admittedly, late mornings or mid-afternoon, which may not be the best for trade). And yes, those few souls who ventured within during that time were oversees Tourists with a capital T. Locals tend to walk by on opposite side of the street.

Wednesday night's Women's Death Brigade protest was raucous and colourful as you'd expect (dig those pink smoke bombs) if strangely anticlimactic. The Museum proprietor has now installed a protective shutter to screen the shop front nights which is most unsporting. Further additions include blue plaques commemorating Elizabeth Stride and ... George Chapman, the Cable Street serial poisoner and one of several billion Ripper suspects. Wonder if Tower Hamlets council approved that? Must say, the Police did well, and, far as I could see, there were no arrests. Just a few disgruntled motorists. At least The Brown Bear is doing a roaring trade Wednesday nights off the back of it! Have attached a scan of a leaflet I was handed for anybody interested. Attachments:

Glad to hear it passed off peacefully. The anniversary of the murder of the first canonical Ripper victim, Mary Ann aka Polly Nichols will be coming up soon...31st August.

Update. The 'Museum' has applied for a retrospective planning order to draw a line under the alleged "unauthorised works carried out on the premises" issue. The Council claim they are "powerless" to act against Ripper rotter Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe and his ghastly glorified gift shop popular tourist attraction that's always empty. Evening StandardOur man on the spot received the following open email from Becky Warnock, the woman behind the Celebrate Suffragettes not Serial Killers petition. Finally, an unidentified sharpshooter recently scored a direct hit on the Ripper mural with a pink paint bomb. Must have been done during opening hours, too, otherwise the shutter would have protected his or her chosen target. - fem dem

I could imagine the outcry locally if someone created a museum commemorating the activities of the so-called "Black Panther", Donald Neilson, who gunned down a local sub-postmaster in the middle of the night in nearby Baxenden, amongst his other murders, etc. Donald Neilsen

I well remember the kidnap of Lesley Whittle and the discovery of her body, hanging from a wire at the bottom of a drainage shaft. I also remember the furore and anger over the film, 'The Black Panther', that was produced in 1977, just 2 years after the death of poor Lesley Whittle. She was only 17 years old when she died, and I can't imagine the torment and terror she must have gone through.

Gloomy Sundae/ Vault Digital Library I think The Mirror's Brian Reade nailed it when he suggested the Manchester equivalent would be opening a souvenir-flogging shrine to Ian Brady and Myra Hindley in the guise of a "Children's Museum." At time of writing, Becky Warnock's petition - "Revoke the planning permission for the new museum on Cable street or force it to close down and re-open as the women's history museum we were promised" - is just 127 signatures short of its 7000 target. Have since learned the entry fee is £12 per adult and not the £10 quoted me by security staff.

Just caught the tale-end of a news item about this on Sky News. Apparently there's to be a protest today. They did a very short little interview with one of the protesters, a Lisa Mckenzie. I've no way of recording it or putting it up here I'm afraid. But I did find a link to an article and video(with the owner* Alan Keery) on Sky dated today,

I've no way of recording it or putting it up here I'm afraid. But I did find a link to an article and video(with the owner* Alan Keery) on Sky dated today, Last Sunday's was the latest in a series of these anti-gentrifications protests. Class War called off the 'Museum' demo late on the Saturday night, citing the likelihood of mass arrests in the wake of the 'Cereal Killer' disturbances earlier in the week, and the ludicrously over-inflated police presence suggests they had a point. With no rabble-rousers, zero pyrotechnics (fire-breathers are increasingly popular) and a complete absence of inflatable pigs, it was left to a handful of local waifs, strays and street-drinkers to mutter fuck offs to the media vultures who'd turned up hoping for some entertainment of a violent nature. After an hour, even the curious bystanders got fed up with gawping at nothing and evaporated, leaving the London Live crew to settle for another boring interview with the Ripper Rotter and his recently acquired hipster beard. God, but it was disheartening.

For those of you who've expressed an interest, there's a thoroughly researched and (I thought) commendably balanced article on the 'Museum' by Trevor Bond and Jon Rees in the current issue of The Ripperologist #145, which you can download as a free pdf HERE. Other highlights include Adam Wood's editorial, Gore Peddlers?, and Kate Bradshaw's Jack Is A Feminist Issue. #stufftheripper #ripperrotter
