In My Lady's Chamber: Hugo Fane, known to his Foreign Office colleagues as 'The Bulldog', has always had a thing for his best friend's wife. Now Jason Vallance is dead and Laura of the legendary black negligée is wealthy, unattached, and, at forty years of age, more beautiful than ever. Laura, for her part, has always been close to Hugo, but her love for Jason was real and it is far too early to be thinking of a relationship. Hugo reminds her of his nickname in diplomatic circles and agrees to give her all the space she needs. But if ever he can be of help, all she need do is call.
Laura advertises for a butler to take over the running of her Belgravia residence. Roger Masters, young, super-efficient, deuced handsome, is a perfect fit and Liza, the new cook hired on his recommendation, is the galloping gourmet in a skirt. How fortunate she is to have them aboard, especially as she was left with no option but to dismiss long-serving Betty the maid for theft (she still can't believe it)! Little does Mrs. Vallance realise but her new employees are partners in crime, their speciality: poisoning wealthy widows for huge financial gain. Will Hugo catch on in time to save the love of his life?
Both tie-ins make for worthy souvenirs of a classic series, but fans of supernatural horror fiction are maybe best to opt for More Tales From Thriller as the début is exclusively devoted to horror-tinged murder fiction.
