Hi Andreas, this story was dramatized on the Alfred Hitchcock TV anthology series in 1964, with Christopher Lee in the role of Jorla. I think I watched it on you tube a few years back. I enjoyed it a lot but can't recall much about it.
The title of the TV version is "The Sign of Satan."
Best wishes,
Steve

It was nice to see Lee in this. He was, well, interesting. On the whole I thought the episode so-so. Of course tv was much more restrained back then, and I had no problems that this was the lamest back mass on screen since The Devil Rides Out. It was kind of hilarious. But I thought the screenplay of the adaption leached every momentum out of the story. Some parts also made more sense in print. I guess Hitchcock was not the best place for an adaption. Too cosy. Of course this was more crime orientated show and not a horror show. But it would have made a terrific entry for Tales from the Crypt. 40 or more years later, but still.

Hi Andreas, What you say about that adaptation pretty much gibes with what I can recall. I mostly remember being excited when it started because it seemed so promising, and intriguing to see Lee acting in a US series--he also did an episode of ONE STEP BEYOND (maybe in the same year and on the same trip), which I recall being better--in part because it was a half hour format and the story was tighter.
But my very vague memory is that that particular show from the Bloch story did not live up to the initial promise. Maybe I'll view again to see what I think.
Karloff's THRILLER series would have been a better home for this. As I've commented in the past, he dramatized tales by Bloch, Derleth, Lady Asquith and others.
cheers, Steve

I spend an afternoon watching a few episodes after reading about this, mostly episodes based on stories. "Pigeons from Hell", "Your's Truly Jack the Ripper" and others. Considering the time of production I liked most of them.
