Mayflower-Dell, 1964 A half-crazed killer on the loose from Broadmoor... together with a bunch of twilight people from Bruno's Striporama in Soho: a forgotten idol of the teenage mass, a has-been film-producer, a dead-beat sob-sister - each desperately trying to find a way out.
SHAKE WELL AND YOU HAVE A COCKTAIL FOR CRIME ON ANY SCALE.This one seems to be written with real energy and bags of moody atmosphere. I found it at the same shop as The Treasure Hunters (which Severance has now identified as a re-write of Terror Lock by McNeilly). There was also a Baker war-story there, which I expect I can find again if anyone's interested. Not keen on war stories myself. My copy of The Big Steal has a biro signature on the cover, so I got this scan from Trash Fiction. There's a film titled The Big Steal, but it predates this novel. However it might be worth linking Noir of the Week for future reference.

First published 1964; this Five Star edition 1972 Copyright by W Howard Baker I got half-way through typing out the blurb for this one, when I realised it seemed familiar... No need for a new thread then.
