I have a granddaughter who lives in Essex and would LOVE that - next time we go... It needs an Essex Vinny Price geezer running it, on a mobility scooter for full effect...

I've come back to this thread as something reminded me of it, and... weird I wrote that bit about the scary Vinny Price type bloke, as I now have a holiday home (alright, a caravan) in Walton, and since last year we've spent a lot of time down there. And what do I find to be a regular sight in Clacton? An old bloke on a mobility scooter who blasts gangster rap whilst towing a trailer that has a coffin with a skeleton on it, emblazoned with the legend 'Count Dracula'. Quite splendid, and I swear I'm not making this up!

We so need to recruit this excellent fellow, Mr. Hack. See if you can find out what he keeps in the coffin.

This brings back memories. Although I didn't move to the northwest until the 1970s, as a child I spent several holidays in Birkenhead (we knew how to live back then!), because my great aunt lived there. I loved going to New Brighton and well remember Wilkie's indoor amusements. Do you know if there's a list of the old rides anywhere? I was too scared and too little to go on the Horror House ride (thank goodness, considering what happens in "The Companion"!), but I'm sure I'm not misremembering that there was also some sort of ride around the solar system. Sounds a bit weird, now I come to think about it (and a quick search of the Net hasn't revealed anything), but surely I can't have dreamt it?

Exhumed from elsewhere on forum. Ah, it works! Well then, here's a shot from the location of "The Companion"...

As a youngster, the seaside was somewhere you came for a day trip or week's holiday, then went back home. I remember one year seeing lots of kids in school uniforms walking along the front--it must have been sometime in September--and it suddenly struck me that these places had a life outside the few months when they were crowded with visitors. It seemed so strange to me that people actually lived there all year round.

Had a look at this old thread and then had to look for videos on YouTube of the coin operated working models mentioned. Some that match descriptions given here can be found, but also a brand new, more complicated one, in the spirit of the old ones: Kieron Rose. "Haunted House Automata." October 14, 2021. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALf4bWu5bWgI wonder how he then vents all the smoke?
