Glad you got along with this. I feel like there's a odd sort of a kinship to being a Smith fan. I suppose he's a cult, even if a bit frowned upon nowadays. Certainly has the in jokes and secret codes. Let them frown. I can't take this kind of criticism seriously any longer. Every story is a slice of its time, warts and all. As a writer Smith build himself a remarkable niche. How many of his contemporaries have sunk into obscurity? I am not blind to his shortcomings as a writer, but he did more things right than a class of writer workshop absolvents can ever hope to achieve.

Nothing wrong with criticism of course, but I've no time at all for the smug, context free and faintly censorious tone of some present day reactions to Smith and his kind, even though my actual views on the world are more present day.
