Lest I confuse anyone, I should say that I may be misremembering Chris Harman being a winner in the competition. It wouldn't surprise me at all - he's a terrific writer. He really is - "Jackdaw Jack" is one of my favourite stories in G&S. |

I agree completely about Chris Harman and Clive Ward--The Spinney is one of my favourite of his. In fact, I think that G &S was blessed with some very talented writers over the years, and I never read a story that I didn't enjoy.
If GSS was getting around 100 stories then I can imagine competitions held by the Times etc getting considerably more, so possibly some screening was employed.
