“Good evening. The game you are about to see is the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football, possibly in the history of the game .......” David Coleman, much loved voice of British sport commentary through the 'sixties and 'seventies. R.I.P.

Very sad news. Rip David. Was that quote about the "Battle of Santiago" in the 1962 World Cup when Chile and Italy took part in a very bad-tenpered confrontation? Coleman was also the guy who covered the 1972 Munich hostage massacre.

The very same, Rip. As refereed by Arthur Ellis, who would later perform the same duties for It's A Knockout during the Satanic reign of the disgraced Stuart Hall. Apparently, in the built up to the game, the Italian press run a derogatory piece questioning the suitability of the Chileans to host so prestigious a tournament and the morality of its women. Footage of the ensuing psychotic violence still makes for a ghoulish watch. And you are right: David Coleman will likely be remembered for his coverage of the tragic events at the Munich Olympics, but I'm sure he'd prefer we celebrate a more positive sporting triumph, in which case, Brazil's glorious success in the 1970 World Cup will do nicely.

Dem, I think it may have been Ken Aston who refereed the Chile-Italy match. The spirit in which it was played could be neatly summed up by the following passage from Wikipedia: "...Sanchez broke Humberto Maschio's nose with a left hook..."
Agreed on the 1970 World Cup, Dem. It was perhaps the best there has ever been and DC was at the top of his game during it...not a bad way to be remembered. We shall sadly not see David Coleman's like again.

The spirit in which it was played could be neatly summed up by the following passage from Wikipedia: "...Sanchez broke Humberto Maschio's nose with a left hook..." As is too often the case, I stand corrected, Rip. Mr. Ellis had the dubious privilege of refereeing the equally notorious Brazil V Hungary quarter final tie in the 1954 World Cup (aka 'The Battle Of Berne), a vicious grudge match which culminated in fist fights, bottle-throwing and broken bones in the dressing room. Strange how many English refs get to officiate the feisty games. Not quite on the same scale of brutality, but think back to the Spain V. Netherlands final of the 2010 tournament, and it was poor Howard Webb struggling to keep order.

It is so sad and disappointing when what one anticipates to be great matches between superb teams like Brazil and Hungary (they were truly a great team in the 50s) degenerate into violent battles. As you say, Dem, British refs have seen more than their fair share of such contests.
