A little gem from 1997, released by Dark Horse. Had a nice cover drawn by Bob Eggleton, and four short comic stories. 1. Burn Out - A soldier wearing power armor hunts radiation-eating monsters (which resemble the Terror Dogs from Ghostbusters on steroids) in a destroyed futuristic Seattle to avenge his family. He kills two of the normal-sized beasties before taking on the "mother" in a sports arena, sacrificing himself to destroy her. With a very dark ending, this is definitely the most dismal of the four. 2. Jungle of the Giants! - A scientist - who bears an uncanny resemblance to Chuck Norris - is lost, alone, in a green-tinted jungle world where he is hunted by a giant lizard of his own creation. It's eventually revealed that he has actually been shrunken and put in a terrarium. There's a nice bit of gore when he kills the "giant" lizard by stabbing it in the throat with a homemade spear. It definitely feels like a grittier version of The Incredible Shrinking Man. My only complaint is that after the twist, it just sort of abruptly ends. 3. Mike and Viv Go to Vegas! - A bickering married couple on their way to Las Vegas accidentally drive through a time warp (or something) and accidentally end up in the Cretaceous period. They continue bickering despite the abrupt and inexplicable change of scenery, and, in general, they seem like they're in more danger from each other than they are from the dinosaurs. There's a few scenes involving a pair of T-rexes chowing down on a dead triceratops Mike and Viv hit with their car (!). Easily the silliest of the four, and it clashes tonally with the other tales, and feels like it doesn't belong. 4. Monster Island - A new chain of islands appears overnight off the coast of South America. The US government sends a research team to investigate. Picking one of the islands at random, they discover it is teeming with dinosaurs and other huge monsters. Once there, of course, they start getting picked off one by one by a variety of fanciful beasties, including a really great bit where a female scientist is swallowed by a giant hairy worm with tentacles around its mouth. Definitely the best of the bunch and it has a suitably ominous twist ending.
