Hello all, I'm currently updating an article (that's been available on the Mausoleum Club website for the past few years) on the television adaptation of John Burke's "Party Games", which was broadcast as "The Corpse Can't Play' in the 1968 anthology series Late Night Horror. Although this production has long since been lost, I managed to compile a fair bit of information from the surviving script, press reviews and corresponding with cast members etc. However, since the play's production file no longer exists in the BBC's archives, I was keen to know whether John Burke had retained any correspondence or notes regarding this adaptation of his story (e.g. correspondence with the production staff etc) or whether his thoughts on the play as broadcast had been documented anywhere. I'm aware that a few gentlemen who frequent this forum had been in touch with the author some years ago and, although it's undoubtedly a long shot, I wondered if they were aware of any info that could be passed on? If so, I'd be very very happy to hear from them (perhaps via personal message via this site if that suits?). Otherwise, if anyone is interested in reading the original article, it's still available online at: www.the-mausoleum-club.org.uk/Index/Gazette/Corpse%20Cant%20Play%20(The).pdf
Many thanks, Regards Colin

Heya Colin,
I'm in possession of all of John's contracts, letters etc - there's nothing about Party Games/Corpse Can't Play in amongst them sadly.

Hi Johnny
Many thanks for the prompt reply - very much appreciated!
I suspected it was probably a long shot, but at least I now know for certain :-)
And thanks for taking the time to sift through the papers etc!
Regards Colin

A telerecorded film print of this particular episode has long been thought to exist, though its owner was a mystery, as they bought the print from a secondhand film dealer just shortly before a tv archivist could identify it as a rare piece of tv history. In May of this year that 16mm print was handed over to Kaleidoscope, the television archive and recovery organisation. Not sure if that means it's likely to get an airing any time soon, but it's good to know it actually survived and does exist.

Many thanks, Regards Colin Although this is of no help with the script this episode had a profound effect on me as I saw it at the grand age of nine years. I was already a massive fan of the Pan Horror stories but had never seen anything horrific. I was staying overnight at my gran's in an old tenement in Edinburgh. She liked company and we watched it together in silence. The eyeball scene is burned in my memory. I slept beside her afterwards with the old post office clock ticking in the high ceilinged room and my gran snoring like a werewolf. Possibly never fully recovered from that episode. It would be incredible if it was aired again.

Just resurrecting this thread as a 16mm print of this particular episode (unbroadcast since 1970 and long thought lost) was recovered earlier this year - fantastic news.
The archive TV organisation Kaleidoscope will be screening this as part of their 'Missing Believed Wiped' event in November.
Great news for fans of John Burke and archive TV horror alike :-)

'The Corpse Can't Play' is now restored to colour and out as a dvd and comes with a chonky booklet detailing the history of the series, the episodes that were never made and the restoration of the found print. Also includes an in-depth biography of John Burke written by yours truly.

The synopsis of "The Corpse Can't Play" makes it sound somewhat similar to Bradbury's "The October Game."
