A couple of his sound really promising - Mr Nicholas and that Day the Call Came, especially. Apparently he's still alive, though very old -- I'll try writing him a letter tomorrow. The various editions of Day the Call Came pictured online have some really wonderful blurbs on their covers...

Ramsey -- although Amazon is still selling it, Centipede Press's site shows "The Face that Must Die" as out of print. Are there any plans to bring it back again?

Funny you should mention him -- we're doing his I Am Jonathan Scrivener (1930), which will have an introduction by Michael Dirda. I just finished reading it a couple days ago and thought it was amazing. A literature professor friend of mine I shared it with agreed and couldn't believe it had been so totally forgotten. Have you read any of his other stuff? Several of them sound like they might be good. Oh, and I've published a list of the books we've taken on so far, if it's of any interest to folks here: valancourtbooksblog.blogspot.com/

That's an impressive list, V! Well done indeed!
I haven't read any other Houghton, I admit, but I suspect there's more we could usefully discover.

My suggestion is Tide of Desire by Sheena Clayton. Apparently this is a romance novel with Cthulhu Mythos elements by the late Brian McNaughton.

Tide of Desire isn't in a single library worldwide, and I don't see a copy for sale anywhere. Sounds intriguing though.

Don't have a copy, but once snagged a cover scan and the blurb in case they came in handy one day. Sheena Clayton - Tide Of Desire (Pandora, 1983) Blurb: Antonia Shaw, a New York poet, is awarded a fellowship, permitting her to spend the summer on a lovely island off the coast of Maine.
She goes to the island .... it is a strange, lonely place; she becomes uneasy when she hears odd hymns coming from the church; the natives of the island all have a disquieting look.
She befriends Lance Hawkins, one of the few inhabitants who isn't a lifetime resident - they become lovers.
She soon finds out that the islanders are adherents of an ancient cult - they are worshippers of a demonic force .... Antonia fears for her life - her only hope is Lance. But is he part of the cult?

Wow, what a horrible cover! But a relief to know the book actually exists.
