There used to be a character in one of the comics, possibly in the late 1960s, called Grimly Fiendish, which I used to enjoy reading, but for the life of me I can't remember which comic it was in. Grimy Feendish, "the Rottenest Crook in the World" starred in Shiver & Shake, though he first appeared a decade earlier in Wham!. He was created by Leo Baxendale ( Bash Street Kids', Minnie The Minx, etc.) and the Damned misspelt his name in their smash hit tribute single, Grimly Fiendish, possibly at the publishers insistence, as happened with glam punk superstars Mott The Hoople's ultraviolent anthem, Crash Street Kids.

You can put me down as someone who loved both the strip and the song. In later incarnations didn't Grimly have worms crawling out of his mouth?

Dem, many thanks for the information on Grimy. I can't remember if I read Shiver and Shake, so perhaps I came upon him in Wham! I think I had an annual circa 1968 called Smash! in which Grimy was featured, alongside other strips such as Desert Island Dick (a Robinson Crusoe-type figure trapped on a tiny desert island with a single tree and occasionally an octopus for company), Figaro (a bumbling Mexican bandit with attendant gang), Ug (a caveman), The Man from B.U.N.G.L.E. (a comic Man from U.N.C.L.E. spoof) and others that I can't remember. Perhaps all these strips featured in Wham! as well as in the annual that I had, but it's also possible that my memory is playing tricks and I am putting all those strips together when they were actually from different comics.

Mrs. Dem has boxes and boxes of Whizzer & Chips, Whoopee!, Buster and what have you, but i'm only allowed access (and under strict supervision) when i've been good which, as you can imagine, is almost like a life ban. Never mind. Seeing as it's a cold day, here's Pongo Snodgrass to cheer us up. Attachments:

Leo Baxendale was possibly the only british kids comic artist whose books - both of his work and his autobiography - were ever on sale at the anarchist bookshop in whitechapel. A bit surprising to see them there, but not onceyou've read a bit about and by him. A fascinating bloke who suffered that most cruel of afflictions for a cartoonist in later years, loss of vision.
Grimly Fiendish was always a wonderful character, no matter how it's spelt, and is a key in Leah Moore and Alan Reppion's Albion (plotted by big Al Moore), which was supposed to introduce UK comics characters to a US audience. It failed, although it was a noble failure. The first half is excellent, but the second half gets a bit confused and crowded as they try to shoehorn in too many references and characters. It's no wonder the target US audience got lost - I know a few people in the UK who were waiting expectantly found it a bit much as well. With hindsight, maybe they should have left something back to make the second half clearer, but having said that it's still well worth reading.
I think I might have said this before, so apologies if that's the case.
And if Dem only gets a look at the comics when he's good, then HOW does he even know they exist??

Ken Reid's Faceache, who also appeared in Albion, is the best reason for hunting out Buster. Attachments:

Nice! What I wouldn't have given for that - right up there with the missile-shooting Corgi batmobile.

Which, of course, is just a coincidence.

View AttachmentI occasionally dream that I am in a shop or at a market stall where there are piles of comics and magazines that I used to read and collect in the 70s, and I am able to browse and buy them to my heart's content. The disappointment I feel when waking up and finding it was just a dream is great.
