The original cover picture was a lot better.

Glad you liked the original Patrick Woodroffe artwork. There's a good reproduction of the artwork in Woodroffe's Mythopoeikon, published by Dragon's World 1977, page 89.
The original was more generic, but with Steve Upham's new cover, I asked him to illustrate a scene or character from the title story. I think he's done a fantastic job and he also did the overall wraparound design too. So, for me personally, I think I have been very lucky to have had two brilliant pieces of cover art for this title!

I like both covers, and am glad that Steve went in a completely different direction. In point of fact, his is the more accurate depiction of the creature, with the old tramp holding the broken head out in the palm of his hand. The head is uncannily close to how I imagined it.

Hi Mr Sutton. Any news on The Shadow Book Of Horror and the Richard Davis collection? we've a thread for the Corgi edition of The Satyr's Head, too. want me to merge them, or are you happy with things the way they are? Thanks for putting a name to the original artist!

David's also publishing my next collection Frightfully Cosy and Mild Stories For Nervous Types. I couldn't be in better hands, really.

Thanks for the various comments. Dave - so pleased that Steve's cover artwork came so close to your visualization!
Demonik - as the original was published so long ago I think it's okay to leave them un-merged... As for The Shadow Book of Horror, this is still in the stage of working out what exactly I am looking for... Other projects have overtaken my time of late. Watch this space as they say. The Female of the Species and Other Terror Tales will be available in a few weeks. Cover artwork is by Caroline O'Neal. I will be posting a separate thread for this shortly. Johnny has mentioned his new collection from Shadow Publishing, which will be out in the Autumn. Then there's a, so far, unannounced book on the starting blocks... more on that one soon!
