Jack Shepherd went straight from the statue to the hospice, Yep, that's what I thought was in the film - but with my failing memory I just couldn't be sure. Sorry they didn't put your bit in there Q - it really should have been in order to make that bit make sense. And sorry I didn't get back to you earlier about this either. But Lurker has sorted you out now I see. Lurks - I've just PMed you about a copy of that film! I'm waiting for the Extended Version. I do hope that eventually this and the other Aickman films will come available on disc. Mind you, I'm still hoping that the BBC MR James stories will all come available on disc too, hopefully as a boxed set. I would even put up with the new Whistle and I'll Come for You for that!

David, a box-set of the BBC MRJ adaptations came out in Australia last year (it's region-free, so should play on any DVD player). It has all the Lawrence Gordon Clark films from the 70s, the more recent BBC4 films, and both versions of Whistle (bah), as well as 3 of the Christopher Lee readings (no idea why his reading of The Ash Tree was left out). No extras, sadly, not even the BBC4 documentary from a few years back or the Robert Powell or Michael Bryant readings from the 80s, but at least the film prints are good quality. www.shock.com.au/release/568628/collection-m-r-james-collection/

Didn't the MRJ stories come out on disc in a BFI version a few years ago? I seem to remember hearing about that a few years back, when Lawrence Gordon Clark appeared at the Fantastic Films Weekend in Bradford. They were expensive though, and I couldn't afford them. Or maybe they just released a small number of them and not the full set? My memory is ruddy awful! Mind you, the Australian set Lurker talks about sounds ideal. Oh 'eck, I think I'm going to have to find some more money from somewhere ...

The BFI released Whistle and I'll Come To You, A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman. They were seen as pretty expensive, though not as expensive as they became when the BFI stopped selling them and copies started turning up on eBay and through Amazon sellers. A pity as, with a few more extras, they might have justified the price and sold well enough to see the whole set released. I still hope that the BBC will see sense and release a bloody big box-set of "Classic BBC Ghost Stories" with all of the MRJ's, "Schalken the Painter", "The Signalman", "Spine Chillers", "The Stone Tape" (which the BFI also released) and commentaries from Lawrence Gordon Clark and others involved. And, speaking of LGC, he has a book of short stories coming out from Avalard Publishing later in the year, while "Lawrence Gordon Clark's Ghost Stories for Christmas" collects all the MRJ stories he directed, plus "The Signalman", with introductions to each by LGC. publishing.avalard.com/?p=155

I haven't seen it in the ABC shop, JB HiFi, or anywhere else.

Ooooo. That sounds good too. Lurker, how do you know all these fantastic snippets of info? M.R. James faxes me whenever anything new comes along. (He refuses to learn how to text, you know what these old folk are like!) Honestly, through forums, mainly. Any mention of MRJ and that's me hooked.

I'm sorry about that incomplete copy of 'Hands of Orlac' I did you back in the day Lurker; if you want, i can always do you a new complete one although I have to warn you now that dubbing don't get no better! And sadly as yet, I have yet to come upon the other three Aickmans - the search goes on!

No worries, Colin. From what little I watched of 'Orlac', I don't think I'm missing much, dubbed or otherwise.

There was a thread on this series a while back. As it is, I have a copy of this episode on DVD, which I'll be happy to copy for anyone who wants one. I haven't had a chance to check if the scene is there or not, I'm afraid. The series was shown in the 90s on one of the Carlton cable channels, as I recall, and the copy I have was taken from a VHS tape of that broadcast. The disc also has part (though not all) of another 'Night Voices' episode - a version of 'The Hands of Orlac'. This seems to have been badly dubbed from French, and from what little I've seen of it, I don't think I'm missing much by not having the complete episode. Anyone who wants a copy, just PM me with your details and I'll pop it in the post (no need for a blank DVD or to pay for postage). I would absolutely love a copy of this, I've been hunting for these episodes for a good while, I can only hope you see this message as it's been a good while since you posted this.
