not quite, but according to the man himself, he's written the novelisation for the forthcoming Solomon Kane movie. Sev's review of Robert E. Howard's The Right Hand of Doom

according to the man himself, he's written the novelisation for the forthcoming Solomon Kane movie. He wrote it. I read his Howard "collaboration" back then, where he finished some fragments and thought it rather so-so. Of course this movie got already ripped apart in some parts of the Howard fandom, which isn´t a big surprise Those guys are hard to please and a bit dogmatic. Still, I read a plot synopsis of the movie, and frankly it evoked memories of that horrible Kull movie. Not that the new Conan movie sounds any better.

Trailer www.solomonkane.com/ looks good and seems to match the dark, tormented, mood of Howard's character. Shame it appears to be on limited release.

From the trailer- which is not necessarily the most reliable source (I've seen some really bad movies whose trailers looked great) - the film does seem promising.

The administrator of the conan.com website went to an advanced screening of the Solomon Kane movie and said he thought it was very well done. Way past any previous sword and sorcery movies. The guy who directed the movie (who is also on the conan forum) said he walked a fine line between what he wanted to do and what the producers and financial backers wanted. He is hoping that if this movie makes a decent profit he can then make a movie as close to one of REH's Kane in africa tales as possible.
To date no word on the movie being released here in Sydney. I suspect a straight to DVD title myself. We'll see. Last I heard the movie company was struggling to find a distributor who was willing to release it in cinemas, here and other countries...not sure why they'd have that problem?
After Conan, Solomon Kane was REH's best character.
No movie will ever be as good as REH's dark and bloody strories.
I wont be reading Ramsey's adaptation of the screenplay for the same reason I no longer read any of the Conan pastiches...no one manages to write the way REH did. It's not rocket science. Plenty of Howard material to read and read and read to get a feel for his particular style. But only Bjorn Nyberg seems to have managed to get it right.

And some Howard websites ripped it apart. ;D Seemed they actualy went for one of those "origin" movies which in the case of Kane doesn´t bode well. I liked James Purefoy in Rome a lot, but I also thought Ray Stevenson would make a great Punisher, and what a blah movie that turned out. But only Bjorn Nyberg seems to have managed to get it right. Sorry, but no, he didn´t Most Howard pastiches are just sad. Of the many Tor Conan´s the most readable are John Maddox Roberts. Also Sean Moore showed some promise before his untimely death.

I just watched the trailer and liked what I saw. In fact I'm probably looking forward to KANE more than the new WOLFMAN movie.

But only Bjorn Nyberg seems to have managed to get it right. [/quote] Yes. Everyone on the REH forum is aware it was an origin movie. Been discussed endlessly. Also the directors and some other people who had a hand in the production have explained why they had to make an origin movie. If the admin of the official REH Conan website says it was a worthy effort I'm prepared to take Bruce's word for it. Liking Bjorn's Conan writing is a matter of personal taste. I think he was true to REH's style. He made a wonderful effort, considering he wrote in a language not his own. I'm not going to get into an "I'm right and you're wrong" debate. It's just personal opinion. You've got your view and I've got mine. Nuff said.

Liking Bjorn's Conan writing is a matter of personal taste. Of course it is. He made a wonderful effort, considering he wrote in a language not his own. No argument there. This is one of the stranger chapters of the seemingly never-ending Howard pastiches debate. Quite remarkabale that a guy from Scandinavia wrote a Howard story and even got it published in the US. Today this would be impossible, I guess. Concerning the Kane movie, I really am curious how it is. I just re-watched the Kull movie on late-nite tv - what a horrible failure -, and it would be nice if Kane is better. I just don´t get Hollywoods obsession with "Origin" movies. Is the general audiance really that dumb that they won´t "get" a character if they don´t get the origin spoon-fed? Same problem is with the new Conan movie. At least the casting of Jason Momoa as Conan gives some hope, he did good work on Stargate:Atlantis. And if this becomes another train-wreck, you can always watch Scorpion King, the best Conan movie of the last years without Conan

Plenty of Howard material to read and read and read to get a feel for his particular style. Well, I admit I didn't try to do so, either in the seventies or with this novel. Maybe I should have when completing the unfinished tales, but I don't think I should with the novel.

Jaq, re your comment on REH and his imitators.
Not sure if you've checked out Karl Edward Wagner and his Kane (not Solomon) novels? I would suggest they are superior to REH and recommend them without reservation to any reader irrespective of whether they are into fantasy fiction or not.
I think KEW builds many of the elements into his fantasy that the pastiches missed out- particularly the Gothic horror and occult that characterises the best Conan material.
I know KEW was overseeing a series of restored REH Conans but one of the pastichers appointed by REH's estate fell out with him over it. Apparently because KEW wanted to remove all of the terrible stuff that had been added by the pasticher over the years!
I think I may have already rambled on about this elsewhere on the site.
So next time you feel the urge to spend your time and money on a live-action Thunderbirds pic, I recommend that instead you invest it in a Kane paperback. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
(Now you respond by saying you've read all of the Kane books and have mint editions wrapped in mylar bags in a vault and were KEW's illegitimate son and I should stop being so patronising!?!)
