Perhaps the Curse of the Demon cut? Personally the only thing I would have snipped is the early exposure of the monster. You are not alone in this. I like the sound effects, but the monster is so dumb. (Of course I shudder to think what modern CGI would make of it in a remake.) I actually do like the monster, but I thought getting a good glimpse of it early on spoiled its impact at the end. I read I think that Tourneur didn't want the monster at all, that it was at the producer's behest and I can totally see the frustration with it but I'm a pretty big monster fan. I just think monsters should either stay in the shadows until the end, or have lots to do throughout, not be used just as a hook at the beginning for those that otherwise might not pay attention.

That's pretty much what I think as well. If the demon wasn't shown at all, then I doubt the film would be as highly thought of as it is - it would have just seemed like a cop out, and people would be saying how much better it would have been if there had been an actual monster instead of... well, I don't know what, just some wispy mist (or maybe not even that, with the deaths all happening off-screen)?

There have been a couple of rumours about remakes/re-imaginings - There was an announcement in 2013 that Joe Dante was working on a version where Karswell is a "self-help guru", and Dunning is a "celebrity gossip blogger" investigating the death of an actor who got involved with Karswell's cult. At the time, Simon Pegg was even named as having been cast to play Dunning - www.imdb.com/name/nm1365537/news And before that (2009), there was a story that Kenneth Branagh was planning some sort of remake - www.comingsoon.net/horror/news/712927-branagh-has-his-eye-on-night-of-the-demonI think the number of films called Night of the Demon should probably stay at two, given that the unrelated 1980 gory Bigfoot outing is also ace and more might be jinxing things.

I wonder how many confuse this with Night of the Demons, which is as different as imaginable. I still like the original from 1988.

Night of the Demons is rather good fun. Kevin S. Tenney had more flair and wit than many in late 80's horror I thought, I like the Witchboard films and Witchtrap as well. I did enjoy Night of the Demons 2, from the Aussie great Brian Trenchard Smith, though probably the less said about the third film the better, and the remake was pretty forgettable.

We wrapped up The Irregulars tonight. Though some Holmes purists might be outraged by the liberties the series takes with Doyle's characters, I thought it was all good fun. The story is predictable--my 12-year-old anticipated most of the major twists--but at least it's not slow. Have you also watched Love and Monsters with your little 'un? I can certainly understand the positive reviews!

This 1965 series deserves to be better known as many of the scripts were excellent, with great regular cast and memorable guest stars--but the rather gritty black-and-white visual style and lo-fi production values are challenging for most 21st century viewers. The series is called Undermind... it's sort of a crossover between science fiction and the Sixties espionage genre. www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkLgAYidSzSq0HzkKzIsR4JrGohCK3jqVcheers, H.

This looks intriguing--a 2008 film shot in Hungary (with a mostly Hungarian cast, but Anna Friel and Franco Nero in lead roles) about Countess Bathory: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DK-CAbAz-gH.

I get that, Dr Strange! I don't think I've seen Friel in anything before, though her name is familiar. Her hairstylist in Bathory seems to have had tremendous enthusiasm--though I've only seen this trailer, the elaborate coiffures sported by Friel in the title role reminded me of Marisa Berenson in Barry Lyndon.

She's a pretty decent actress, probably most famous over here for being one half of (to quote wikipedia) "the first ever pre-9-o'clock watershed lesbian kiss in British television history", which happened in the soap opera Brookside in 1994.

I have it on DVD, it was part of one of those sampler boxes, in this case a bizarre mix advertised as "Witches and Demons" but delivering such movies as Corman's Dracula and Bunuel's Leonor. Yeah, I know.
Frankly I have no recollection of Bathory. But I am with Dr. Strange. I also could happily look at Anna Friel all day.

Judging again from the trailer, Friel's performance and the Hungarian location filming seem like the main attractions of Bathory. I might watch it just to see more of those castles and landscapes.
Franco Nero was a great beauty way back when... it was nice to see he was still acting at this time. I presume he is retired now, if still living.
