Oh, that anonymous story was a real jolt ! Having read Johnny's tale "Sticking Your Head Out is Dangerous" I can confirm it's truly mental Mark S.

Meanwhile, I've just been playing catchup and Fresh Fiances for the Devil's Daughter is probably in the OED as the definition of the word 'lurid' . I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like it. After that, Richard Middleton's The Conjurer comes as a bit of blessed relief and a very welcome change of pace. Man Overboard is a decent enough little piece with its 'it never rains but it pours' punchline whereas The Chink and the Child is so bleak. Craig Herbertson's Billiard story has the best final image so far, though!

I think anonymous is Jojo. I think the polite thing to say here would be "I wish I was." But as I cannot bring myself to say that, I shall instead observe that the story is somewhat in the tradition of Robert Bloch.

What exactly does 'off my tits' mean here? Craig, from the Urban Dictionary: To be VERY much under the influence of a substance. Most commonly used as either an excuse or a conversation starter.

wouldn't it just! God, i so wish it was but ... As the culprit has now given me permission to unmask them, let's just say that, in common with those contemporary authors who've so kindly joined in with the festive fun and frolics, he or she has been published (more than once) in The Black Book Of Horror series. and yes, the entity in question walks among you most days on this board. "torture! it pleasures me!" lord P.; very pleased that you've sampled the dubious delights of Fresh Fiances .... When you've a spare half hour, i'd recommend The Molemen Want Your Eyes. Man, the shudder pulp guys knew how to have fun! i'm with you on Craig's A Game Of Billiards, too, beautifully paced and a hilariously macabre kiss off. Anonymous has played a blinder. it's good form to remind everyone that, despite occasional tentative flirtations with good taste, Vault is still in love with those hard won "they promote all that is worst about horror fiction" accolades (the timeless "juvenile pigs baying" still retains its capacity to move me to tears of unbridled joy)! i'm not sure how anyone feels about this, and we'd best wait 'til the new year to discuss it, but this business of attaching stories is so easy to handle that maybe it's the way forward for the Workshop Of Filthy Creations section of the board which, through no-ones fault, has been mired in confusion since Filthy Creations magazine set up elsewhere. it certainly needs revamping, there can be little dispute about that.

Is the author Nemonymous rather than Anonymous?

Let's see, so far suspicion has been cast upon Mr. Mains, JoJo, Lady P., Ramsey (albeit that last may not have been entirely serious) and Des Lewis - all of them entirely innocent. i'm gonna keep you all in suspenders a while longer, but if i was anonymous, my head would need such a de-swelling right now ... Day 22. When the beyond merely celestial Kate Bush sang December Will Be Magic Again, she knew of which she shrilled! Last night i was wondering how best to approach a certain Black Book contributor re the possibility of their providing a story for this thread. It seemed awful rude, somehow, contacting a body for the first time with "Oh, by the way. I don't suppose you could do me a favour ...?" So, i'm scribbling down and tearing up notes, getting nowhere fast, when a PM arrives in my inbox ... My one slight concern about including this next story is that it's another from the Benedict J. Jones edited Tales From The Smoking Room, but i'm afraid that, once read there was never any question of my not exhuming it for Vault (Ben, if you read this, I hope you don't mind! From the samples we've seen that is one stormer of a zine). For this reader, Stephen Bacon's Room Above The Shop was among the stand-outs in a consistently rewarding Sixth Black Book Of Horror Stories, and The Strangled Garden is another beautifully crafted chiller, completely different in style, approach, intention - you name it - to yesterday's 'live from the butcher shop' offering, but no less unpleasant for all that. Thank you so much for allowing us to run it, Steve! Mr. Bacon has contributed stories to a number of publications including Dark Horizons, Estronomicon, Filthy Creations (#6) and Black Petals. A new story, By the Sea, has made the final cut for the impending Eighth Black Book Of Horror Stories - yet another good reason to get a copy - and his The House Of Constant Shadow appears in the recent, Ross Warren edited Dark Minds (Dark Minds Press, 2010). Other anthology appearances include Gary Fry's Where The Heart Is and Des Lewis's Null Immortalis, Cone Zero and Cern Zoo. Attachments:

Fantastic story, Stephen! I really loved this one. Been doing some catchup myself this morning. Richard Staines' one made me laugh out loud and Craig Herbertson has planted a truly unforgettable image in my head. Thanks, guys!

After Fresh Fiances, The Mole Men Want Your Eyes was a less lurid experience but was no less stark raving bonkers for it - I particularly liked the 'Scooby Doo' unmasking at the end!
