Bloody hell - four years ago! That's what I'm finding frightening. Up until recently I think I was only reading crime novels (people like Mark Billingham and Mo Hayder) so have wondered about PF's work in that genre. He's an ex-copper, isn't he?

Yeah. And if he behaved the least like Heck, small wonder about that "ex." Strictly from the "not by the book" school of crime prevention, is the fearless DS. Heckenbridge, but then, he's up against both a ruthless torture gang and a bad case of in-house corruption.

Daniel McGachey's The Crimson Portrait was a highlight in the series if I remember it correctly (among many). I just read an online interview by Paul Finch where I think he said Heck's methods were not based on anything like his experience but the experience itself helped with the framework - he said it better. Then again he is a horror author

THE OTHER TENANT - Mark Samuels I found this horribly grim. I'm sure there's more to it than just the story you read. Which makes it worse. I think that's much the case with Keeping Your Mouth Shut in 7th Black Book, too. Uneasy reading.

LITTLE PIG - Anna Taborska
Curious one. Back in The Creaking mode. Inexorable is the word I'd use (yet again), but what a choice to have to face. Oblique and disturbing in a different way.
CASUALTIES OF THE SYSTEM - Tina & Tony Rath
Hilarious anti-PC flim-flammery. If only etc. Those who would rewrite history are obviously ignorant of it.
HOW THE OTHER HALF DIES - John Llewellyn Probert
In a similar vein (I know I know) to the previous story, but cleverly and amusingly subversive.
MUSIC IN THE BONE - Marion Pitman
It's an all female run in, and Marion's story is another welcome diversion from expected horror tropes. A refreshing female point of a view and another unexpected denouement.

THE COAL-MAN - Thana Niveau
Like Simon Bestwick's The Moraine in TTOTLD, Thana offers up a completely different kind of monster. Dazzling. One feels for the heroine and her rather ghastly life, but things are not as they seem...
MEA CULPA - Kate Farrell
What a finish. The ultimate rug-puller.
Another great volume, with some remarkable stories.
