*just had word from Fanatic HQ concerning recent developments at PF. As many people have wondered "what's happened to this collaboration with the BFS, The Best Of Paperback, thought it best to let Justin bring you up to date. And cop a load at what's in the pipeline!* - demIssue 17 of The Paperback Fanatic will be published in January, and I'm conscious this might mean something of a gap since 16 in September, so I wanted to drop you a "newsy" e-mail to assure you The Fanatic is very much alive and kicking. There is a lot happening at Fanatic HQ and I think 2011 could be the mag's best year yet!
The Visual Guide to New English LibraryGoes to print at the end of this week, so if you have ordered a copy (and I'm delighted by how many of you have!) expect a mail from me around mid-November telling you a copy is on its way in the post. I'm really interested in how this turns out and in your feedback as it could generate future projects.
The Best of the FanaticNo sooner did I announce the forthcoming Best Of to be published by the British Fantasy Society, they have a restructure and my editor resigns. So I think it's fair to say that particular project is dead. But if there is enough demand from you, and the format for the Visual Guide to NEL works, I'll publish a Best Of myself. As the saying goes, if you want something doing properly, do it yourself....
Bedabbled! Is the name of a new fanzine dedicated to British horror and cult cinema. Edited by Fanatic contributor Martin Jones and designed by The Fanatic himself, the first issue is a "Bloody Kids" special and includes Blood on Satans Claw, the infamous Mummsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly, an interview with Hammer tie-in novelist John Burke and some very rare ad mats and posters. I'm totally biased, but I think this is an essential read for anyone with an interest in the subject. If you would like to receive details on how to order a copy, please send me an e-mail and I'll forward it to Martin who can contact you from there. (Please note I treat all of my subscriber's detail as totally confidential and would never share any one's details without their permission. It's not me responsible for you getting all of those "magic pill" and "investment opportunity" e-mails!)
Issues 17 and 18 of The Fanatic
Are just about complete and I envisage publishing 17 in mid-January and 18 in mid-April. (With a second baby arriving in between!)
Issue 17 contents New Worlds and Michael Moorcock- a study of the infamous and controversial SF magazine with many rare cover illustrations and insights from key contributors
Horror at Fawcett Crest- a title by title look at the US publisher's horror line including titles such as The Howling, You'll Like My Mother and Diabolus
Nick Carter- the pulp answer to James Bond gets a well overdue appraisal from Andreas Decker
Black Fury- an eye-opening look back at the "Blaxploitation" paperbacks of the LA publisher and their most prolific writer Joseph Nazel, author of Black Gestapo, Satan's Master and Black Cop
Zardoz Book Fair- a review of the UK's premier event for paperback fanatics
Issue 18 contentsBadger Books- Lionel Fanthorpe shares his memories of working at the legendary (and at times, lunatic) British mushroom publisher, prepare to be amazed!
TNT- Andrew Byers' in-depth look at this insane men's adventure series
Mythmaker- Nigel Taylor's study of the SF pulps of cult author Fred Brown
German Pulp- Andreas Decker's fascinating look at the bizarre and outrageous pulp titles of his home country- the covers alone will blow your mind!
Solomon Kane- Ramsey Campbell's article on the puritan adventurer and his personal involvement with finishing some of Howard's manuscripts
I think that's enough for one e-mail!
Anyway, thank you for all of your support in 2010. Please keep your mails and comments and suggestions coming in- they really are the "fuel for my fire." And I hope we all enter 2011 unscathed by the recession and in good health.
Justin, the Fanatic.
