Organised religion of any sort, once it has power over peoples' lives, becomes oppressive and evil. Christianity, when it still had teeth, caused countless amounts of suffering and death. It's only now, when its power has been curtailed in the West by enlightenment, that it has taken on a more user friendly face. But, whether it was RC or protestantism, they could all, in their turn, given enough clout, become bastions of evil.
Islamism is very much like earlier forms of Christianity. The danger for this century is that it will not be forced to grow up and become more benevolent, as Christianity has, by force of reason and secularism.
A film that best sums up the evils of organised religion for me is The Wicker Man. On Summerisle the organised religion prevalent there is a form of paganism - but it could just as easily have been Christianity or Islam. An individual's life means nothing when set against the needs of the official religion. And its adherents feel justified in whatever they do because of it.
A scary concept.
Religious fanatics are, I believe, amongst the most dangerous people there are, especially when they can bring forth the support of either the State or a sufficiently large body of militant followers.
That's true horror.

with you all the way David. The real problem with any religion is when it becomes powerful enough to start imposing its will on luckless chaps like ourselves. Its absolutely in our interest to fight for what I might loosely describe as liberal democracy. I have real fears for the future.

Well, it looks like some **** has complained to e-bay about the terrible offence caused by this item, and the spineless tossers have taken the bear auction down. Bids were up to £219 as well, with 6 days left to run. It would have been a nice donation to a worthwhile charity.

The worst of it is one begins to think in their terms. I paused for a second and considered that the bear might be offensive to some people. Then I thought 'its a f..king teddy bear for Christ's sake' and decided that I am getting too old for this world. The day we can't laugh about the absurdities of this universe is the day to pack it all in.
(apologies to the many Christians here for taking the Lord's name in vain - punishable by death if my memory serves.)

It's only taking the name of H. P. Lovecraft in vain that is punishable by death - or something immeasurably worse...
