Great stuff! Not listened to it all but I don't think that's the Tom Baker Dr Who theme - sounds like the Peter Davison / Sylvester McCoy version?

It's definitely the Peter Howell version used in the later Tom Baker episodes as it was lifted directly from the credits from a Tom Baker episode...it's that initial "sting" that generates the chills Thanks, Mark

Listened to it right through, loved it, and had it robbed by the spawn. Fabulous work. More, please?

John Barry's theme for 'Orson Welles' Great Mysteries' always did it for me, along with the opening credits montage - if memory serves, there was a large car sinking in a river at one point. There is an amorphous music genre called 'Hauntology', where music is made deliberately creepy and unsettling. The earliest of this was arguably made by Boards Of Canada [BOC], on their 'Music Has The Right To Children' album. I have found that the best of this sort of 'vague unpleasantness' is made by Mordant Music, Belbury Poly, and Moon Wiring Club. The latter's 'Frosty Reception' is very creepy indeed. Creepiest of all, though, is 'Beware The Friendly Stranger' from the album 'Geogaddi' by BOC. This track makes the already unhinged, morbid and terrifying cartoon 'Salad Fingers' [why has nobody started a thread on this yet? - the first thing for years to wake me up at night], even creepier. ;D

Spooky synchronicity time: I was tidying up my CDs this afternoon - strict alphabetical order, thank you - and I found one of the unsorted discs was... Boards Of Canada's 'Music Has The Right To Children'. A CD I got given about three years ago and have yet to listen to. I'm off to put it on right now.

I have been having a kind of 'tidy up' of my CD collection [rather half-arsedly, if truth be told - I've got thousands of the shiny bastards], and found four 'X-Files' soundtrack albums; two for the TV show, and two for the first movie. I gave them a 'down memory lane' listen, and was astonished at : how beautifully they were recorded, and : just how powerful and terrifying Mark Snow's original TV score 'The Truth And The Light: Music From The X-Files' is. All the titles are in Latin - my favourite track, simply due to it's sense of creeping dread [and a jolting little sample @ 01:48], is entitled 'Mercatura', which I'm guessing roughly translates to 'The Merchandise'. Familiar voices drift in and out of the tracks; Mulder, Scully, The CSM, Mulder's dad, but they offer no solace to the listener: they serve to make the whole even creepier, even more unsettling. I'd forgotten just how wonderful it was. The other three albums are great too, 'Songs In The Key Of X' is full of great dark music, including a collaboration between the late REM, and the late, very great William S. Burroughs. Also, if you can rewind your CD player back from track 1, you will find a track 0, featuring Nick Cave with the Magnetic Fields. Mark Snow's now iconic 'X-Files' theme is another one of those tunes that, in the course of 30 seconds or so, lets you know what you'll be getting. The opening montage helps, but in this case, you could show pictures of wild flowers, and the music would render them sinister. Anyhow, if you've not heard any of these albums, I urge you to remedy that fact. I don't think you'll be disappointed. ;D
