Excellent spot KC! I've never seen this film & I don't think it's readily available on DVD which is a shame - it looks great and is written by Simon Raven (Doctors Wear Scarlet et al) & the music's by Michael J Lewis (Theatre of Blood) so I MUST find it!!

I get quite a few enquiries from the Pan Horror site from people asking about what story had something nasty being done to one person and another nasty thing being done to another person. The other day I got this enquiry:Hello!
My name is Jennifer. I've been an avid reader of horror shorts for quite a while. I'm a big fan!
I have this problem, however. I am trying to locate the name and author of one of the shorts that was first published in one of the Pan books. I encountered it in a Chinese translation but I am now looking for the English version.
The story talks about a scientist who wanted to know how long a head can stay sentient after it had been lopped off from the rest of the body. He made an arragement with a prisoner who was going to be guillotined for his crimes. In the final passages, the scientist showed his hand to his friends and said that the prisoner's severed head had bit him to prove that it was still conscious.
If you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

What is the Chinese version? Is it a pan horror book , or another book?

The book that I was talking about was actually a Chinese translation.
The background story went like this: A Taiwanese publishing company called "Lin-Bai" collaborated with a local newspaper and started to publish a Chinese-translated version of short stories from the Pan books back in '83 -'84. The series was called "Western Weird Tales"(translation mine; the whole series was in Chinese) and ran weekly for 3 years. At the end of the run, the publishing company compiled all these translated short stories and published them in 3 anthologies. This was in '86. So, basically, these anthologies contained the Chinese versions of Pan Book shorts but they aren't called by that name. They also do not follow any order as found in the original Pan books, either. Just to make everything a little more complicated, they transliterated the titles of the stories and the names of people in them (to make them sound more "Chinese" in the assumption that the readers can related to the characters more). They also did not offer the original titles nor the names of the original authors. This is why I had so much trouble trying to back-track these stories back to the original Pan Books.
Looking back, I can't fault them for doing what they did. The number of people who could speak English in Taiwan back in the 80's was scant and no one really cared much about where the stories came from. But it's a damned shame that when I try to go back to find the originals I've ran into so much trouble. So far, I've only found one other story in the original English ("The Gibbet Inn"). The search continues!
