I thought it was about time I made up a completely nonsensical anthology so how about:
Eat Them Again and Again edited by John L Probert
Let's Pretend Publications 2012 (or more likely never to be honest)
Ever wondered how the great horror authors of our time might have tackled the plot, characters and situations of Pierce Nace's seminal 1977 classic 'Eat Them Alive'? Well wonder no longer as some of today's brightest young authors pay tribute to that very worst writer of yesteryear by emulating the styles of some of the best!
So that's the remit - which classic authors do you think would have got the most mileage out of a short story version of that dreadful novel, and who out of today's writers would be best equipped to do them justice?
Examples to help explain what I'm going on about might include:
Dennis Wheatley's "Eat Them Alive" by John L Probert Arthur Machen's "Eat Them Alive" by Mark Samuels Shirley Jackson's "Eat Them Alive" by Thana Niveau / Lady P (she can't wait!) H P Lovecraft's "Eat Them Alive" by Ramsey Campbell Robert Aickman's "Eat Them Alive" by Thomas Ligotti MR James' "Eat Them Alive" by Paul Finch

Other than Pierce Nace's milestone work and E. M. Stambaugh's Mantis, i'm struggling to think of legit Preying Mantis stories. Bernard Taylor's ghoulish comedy My Very Good Friend from Mary Danby's Frighteners is a must: Teachers Pet, an early episode of Buffy featuring Ms. Natalie French the were-mantis biology teacher.... there must be more?
a couple more suggestions for your terrible antho!
H. P. Lovecraft's The Statement Of Dyke Mellis: found among the papers of the late Brian McConnell
Russell Gray's Fresh Fiances For Satan's Pet! by whichever Vault member is most at home handling "heaving globes", "swelling fleshy mounds", etc.

There's a Kolchak episode called 'Mantis in Lace' I think.
Oh goodness me Mr D'arcy!
How about:
Oh Whistle & My Mantises Will Tear Your Legs Off (M R James) The Willows Have Got Bloody Great Mantises Hiding In Them (Blackwood) The Beckoning Giant Mantis (Oliver Onions) How A Giant Mantis Came to Professor Guildea And Ate Him (Hitchens) SS Experiment Camp Attacked by Giant Mantises (No-one but God I'd love to read that)

How A Giant Mantis Came to Professor Guildea And Ate Him (Hitchens) This one sounds potentially more sophisticated in its symbolism than the original.

The Willows Have Got Bloody Great Mantises Hiding In Them (Blackwood) I knew there was something missing from that one.

On the serious side (boring ;D ), as for other mantis novels, K.W. Jeter did write one called Mantis. I have it, if I get round to reading it any time soon, I'll report back.

I have it, if I get round to reading it any time soon, I'll report back. i don't have a copy but from my understanding it's a psychological thriller of sorts - the protagonist, on the prowl for women who get off on being beaten, raped, murdered, etc., eventually teams up with even deadlier female equivalent of himself (i'm doubtless doing the storyline a huge injustice here). Sounds interesting - i've heard good things about his Soul Eater, too - but out-sized preying mantis versus human race action is unlikely to feature heavily.
