I agree, Stefan Grabinski is one of the most underrated writers of the weird tale. There's a collection entitled THE MOTION DEMON that reprints his tales concerning rail travel and rail stations. The collection waqs once again edited by Grabinski scholar Miroslaw Lipinski and published by Ash Tree Press in 2005. The collection is now hard to come by but there is a copy on Amazon (Hardcover) for just under £30.00 - which is a lot less expensive than some dealers are asking. Dedalus. meanwhile, have published some excellent collections. One entitled THE DEDALUS BOOK OF POLISH FANTASY edited by Wiesiek Powaga. Sadly out of print but if you can find one I recommend the collection highly. Introduction: Dialogue with the Devil · Wiesiek Powaga Co-existence · Slawomir MrozekThe Lady with the Medallion The Greater Punishment · Marek S. Huberath Father Faust · Tadeusz Micinski (excerpt) Strange Street · Franciszek Mirandula The Vampire · Wladyslaw Reymont (excerpt) The Shadow of Queen Barbara · Lucjan Siemienski The Head Full of Screaming Hair · Jan Barszczewski I am Burnin’! · Henryk Rzewuski The Grey Room · Stefan Grabinski; trans. by Wiesiek Powaga The Black Hamlet · Stefan Grabinski Gentleman with a Goatee · Kornel Makuszynski Dinner at Countess Kotlubay’s · Witold Gombrowicz Father’s Experiments Bruno Schulz (excerpt) Mother Joanna of the Angels · Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz (excerpt) The Legs of Isolda Morgan · Bruno Jasienski The White Worms · Wiktor Woroszylski Dragon · Andrzej Bursa The Golden Galley · Jacek Dukaj About the Authors · Misc. My apologies my dear chap - my only excuse (which is actually a pretty valid one) is that I don't spend much time on RCMB any more. I think he's the secret inspiration behind the film Horror ExpressNow you see if you'd put that I would spotted it in a shot!

I wouldn't have thought Grabinski was an influence on the writers of Horror Express, the author's work and atmospherics are far more subtle.
However, there have been several films/shorts based on Grabinski's tales. "Sara's House" (Dom Sary). was a Polish TV film from 1985 was shown recently as part of the Demons and Sinners TV series from Telewizja Kino Polska.
Holger Mandel made a couple of Grabinski shorts, namely "Ultima Thule" (2002) and "Szamota's Mistress" (1999), both under 20 minutes. The latter had previously been filmed as a silent in 1927 by Leon Trystan (as Kochanka Szamoty) but is now, sadly, a lost film.
The third version of "Szamota's Mistress" was filmed by Joseph F. Parda, clocking in at 25 mins the film can be found as an extra on the DVD of Machines of Love and Hate though the film does contain some nice atmospheric touches it is marred by some poor acting.
An adaptation of "The Siding" (Slepy Tor directed by Ryszard Ber ) appeared in 1967 as part of the Polish TV series Opowiesci Niezwykle (“Unusual Tales”). Pozarowisko was another TV short based on the Grbinski tale of the same name from 1969 filmed by Ryszard Ber, and another untranslated tale, "Nikt nie jest winien" (No One is at Fault) was filmed in 1986 by Ryszard Zatorski.

A beguiling collection, including the lady on the cover, who I've fallen for - I'm hoping the snake is just a warning figment of my subconscious.

My wife is Polish - I'll have to ask her if she can locate some of these shows - Unusual Tales sounds especially intriguing. Of course, she'll have to translate as we go, which might ruin the effect...

Mark, I'm glad you mentioned that - some of the stories in The Dark Domain brought to mind The White Hands.

Dark Domains is a very fine collection, at £4 it is a steal. There is also another pb collection avaialble from CB edition "In Sarah's House". This is a short collection of half a dozen stories in a very nice pocket sized format (I'm studiously avoiding the word "cute" as I don't want to get blacklisted ) If memory serves me it doesn't overlap at all with Dark Domain. I got my copy direct from the publishers at: www.cbeditions.com/2007_2008.htmlIt comes in at £7.50 uk plus £1.80 postage from the publisher. It is also on the book depository for £4.74 + £2.75 postage. Cheers - chris - Chris

I wouldn't have thought Grabinski was an influence on the writers of Horror Express, the author's work and atmospherics are far more subtle. Well, it was really a bit of wishful thinking out loud my saying that about Grabinski having been the source of Horror Express. But I'm not sure that Grabinski's "subtle". It depends who you compare him to: he's not subtle in the De La Mare or Aickman manner. Do you have any issues of the Grabinski Reader, Hellishnel? I don't but would love to know what they contain. I've exhausted the English language collections available to my knowledge (as mentioned here The Motion Demon, In Sarah's House, and The Dark Domain) Mark S.

I think my favourite Grabinski tale is "The Area".
When I read it I like to have this song by the 13th Floor Elevators playing in the background.

Carl Ford! The Legend! Great to see you again in Brighton, I hope it's not another twenty years before we share a pint again...
Thanks for posting that list of contents. Not sure I have all the contents; one or two look unfamiliar, I'll have to check. Brilliant stuff.
