Legend proves that vampires and martial arts just don´t gel. Unpopular opinion, that last one, but true. Nah, you are right. LEGEND is pretty bad; one whishes Cushing´s Van Helsing had a better end than this. At least they spared us Dracula in Harlem, which would have been the next logical step As much as Lee´s muttering about his role can be grating today, he was right to say no to this. But you are too harsh with Satanic Rites. Sure, it doesn´t makes a lot of sense, but this is so seventies in many regards, it is fun.

i've searched the site for a hammer dracula thread, since i've watched some of the films over the last four years, and while they made the late sir christopher lee and peter cushing into childhood heroes (same as lugosi and karloff|) the most interesting aspect of them is their continuity as a series, with it's implications on the role of dracula as a force of evil in human society. note: 1: horror of dracula, dracula prince of darkness, dracula has risen from the grave, and taste the blood of dracula, form an internal series, since the count's resurrections are visibly related to his demise in each film. 2: in horror of dracula, and dracula has risen from the grave, he is unintentionally brought into contact with civilized society , either by jonathan harker who agreed to work for him as a librarian (not a lawyer as in stoker's novel) and in "risen from the grave" by the blood of the wounded priest. in both "prince of darkness" and "taste the blood" he is resurrected by willing accomplices |(klove and lord courtley|) 3: as i recall, within this internal series, dracula either wishes to control his would-be victims, or to avenge wrongs done to him or his accomplices, either directly or indirectly, though their friends and family. 4: thus, this cycle of destruction and resurrection is apparently the price that dracula has to pay for his desire to subjugate others to his will, or his vindictive nature. as for the people who believe that they can win anything from him |(women, lord courtley, klove, his slavish servant|) suffer for their hubris and trust of his evil. 5: i guess that this is what sir christopher lee referred to when he said that these films are "modern morality plays" similar to the mediveal ones/
i did'nt mention brides of dracula, scars of dracula or the two modern ones, since they are not part of the continuity, and the plot structure that i referred to is repeated in them, with the exception of dracula's desire to destroy humanity in "satanic rites"
a book series that reflects a similar relationship between a vampire and the morales of humanity around him, for better or for worse, is the don sebastian series by les daniels. it began in the heyday of hammer studios, and i would'nt be at all surprised to find out that it was heavily influenced by them. by my personal understanding they provide us with an understanding of a dracula-esque vampire's mind during those cycles of resurrection and destruction.
another support for my speculated connection between hammer and don sebastian, is the fact that hammer planned a dracula film titled "kali blood bride of dracula" for which a poster was made featuring british red-coats, which would set the plot in the 19'th century, not unlike "no blood spilled" by les daniels. i wonder if the film would have featured a scene with the stop-mption model of the godess kali from "golden voyage of sinbad" manipulated by dracula, or destroying him with her sabres. perhaps tom baker would have accepted the role? we will never know.

As good as Neame was in Dracula AD 1972, I have to say that I would still prefer Mr Lee in the role. As much as Lee himself openly hated reprising the role of the Count again and again, I could watch him in the part forever. He was that good as Dracula.
