Not a patch on The Paperback Fanatic, and I don't know if mainstream magazines like SFX help or hinder the horror genre - but I think they have a good mix in this issue. I was asked to write a four page article on the Pan Book of Horror Stories for the mag - and Justin would agree here, the first draft was f**k**g hoaching - but hopefully it does the series proud and tests the water to see if a reboot would be worthwhile or not. Contents for horror special are: THE TOP 20 HORROR VILLAINS Who's the greatest horror movie bad guy? We asked SFX readers to vote for their favourites. Here are the results!
VIDEO NASTIES Our man risks his sanity by watching all 74 "official" video nasties, and rating them in order, from the worst to the best.
FRIDAY THE 13TH The slasher franchise is 30 years old! We celebrate three gloriously gory decades of Jason Voorhees.
HIDDEN TREASURES Horror directors, screenwriters and novelists recommend scores of obscure cult horror films, books and comics that you simply must hunt down and check out.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET We find out how they plan to resurrect Freddy Krueger as we go on-set for the remake of the classic 1984 film.
ROBERT ENGLUND The man who was Freddy recalls the making of the original A Nightmare On Elm Street, in an extract from his new autobiography.
RICK BAKER The make-up maestro talks us through his gorgeous concept art for the Wolfman, as played by Benicio Del Toro in the new remake.
THE PAN BOOK OF HORROR The story of the sadly-missed anthology series, whose gruesome tales sickened and delighted generations.
MUTANT BLOOD A shocking new short story by horror novelist Simon Clark.
BLAXPLOITATION HORROR Blacula! Blackenstein! Dr Black, Mr Hyde! We examine the black-themed horror movies of the mid-'70s - with lashings of lurid posters.
THE WOLF MAN With the remake hitting cinemas soon, we look back at the making of the 1941 Universal classic, starring Lon Chaney Jr.
THE CRAZIES George Romero's 1973 film, in which a virus turns the population of a small town homicidal, has been remade. We talk to the director of the new version.
PIRANHA 3D Joe Dante's B-movie favourite is also getting a reinvention, adding a terrifying third dimension to those killer fish! We go on set and talk to director Alejandra Aja.
LOST WORLDS Investigating the silent horror films now missing, presumed lost forever.
HORROR COMICS Writers and artists such as Gene Colan, Steve Bissette and Steve Niles discuss their part in the history of American horror comics.
SPANISH SHOCKS Talking to actors and directors, we explore the rise and fall (and rise again) of Spanish horror films, from The Awful Dr Orloff to The Orphanage.
MY LIFE IN HORROR Much-loved actors such as Brad Dourif, Ingrid Pitt and Kane Hodder talk about what it's like to be a horror movie icon.
FROM THE SFX ARCHIVES There are 12 pages of reprinted material in this special, but it's all top-grade stuff: making of features on The Wicker Man, The Evil Dead and The Thing from issues 62, 93 and 101 of SFX, revised and updated.
SFX COLLECTION: HORROR goes on sale on Wednesday 27 January, priced £7.99.

This looks quite good, I gotta say. I like the idea of watching all the Video Nasties - a proper head-battering exercise...The Beast In Heat followed by Don't Go Near The Park followed by Forest Of Fear...those three alone would be enough to splatter anyone's mind...
and kudos for getting the Pan story in there Johnny, fine work...
Eight quid though...hot dang!

cheers for the trailer - it does look decent, but then i enjoyed the 'remake' of 'dawn...' so....
saw the remake of 'day o the dead' the other week - thought i hadn'tseen it and then realised i'd just blocked the crapness out when i watched it six months before.

Reading it now and it's great. Can't quite believe I just bought a magazine from a mainstream newsagent and it had an article on the Pan Books...is that a light at the end of the tunnel I see? Congratualtions to Johnny and the SFX crew for producing this

I bought on Friday and was really impressed with Johnny's article. What a tour de force!
On the plus side, too, were the beer mats. What more could you ask for?

Gonna have to buy this. I too saw it in WH Smiths but the price put me off. I got the other Horror Special they did a few years back and it offered nothing. The Pan thing really makes it worthwhile and I know if I miss buying it I'll haunt myself forever and pay over the odds on ebay.
The price is like the same as a Paperback. And I want THE STRAIN ( £12.99 in hardback bargain )
As for your question Andydecker as to the worst nasty. Do you mean worst as is violent and gruesome ? Or worst as in shite ? I can help , I was sadly once quite a scholar on the subject and have em all.

As for your question Andydecker as to the worst nasty. Do you mean worst as is violent and gruesome ? Or worst as in shite ? I can help , I was sadly once quite a scholar on the subject and have em all. Lol, and here I thought, I had too much terrible movies in my collection. I only read about the british "nasty" craze, whre "chainsaw" apparently became a dirty word. On the other hand, I live in a country where you still can´t get an uncut release of "The Evil Dead". So I can realte. I meant the worst as in shite. I bought a few eurotrash dvds in the last months. I can appreciate the oeuvre of Jean Rollin but find Jess Franco deadly dull. Still, what is called today so lovingly Eurotrash is not necessarily a typical Nasty.

Well as far as the shite ones go BLOOD RITES is a standout ( see an eye plucked out the size of an onion ) WEREWOLF AND THE YETI ( Yeti ? what yeti ? oh yeah that fairy guy who turns up right at the end , and of course the shot of Big Ben in London accompanied to the tune of Scotland the Brave ) FROZEN SCREAM ( Wait till you see the fist fights and dance scenes ) REVENGE OF THE BOGEYMAN (Killer toothbrushes, shaving foam , and of course the car exhaust blowjob ) DON'T GO IN THE BASEMENT ( Lollypop lovin nutbag) DELIRIUM ( Impotent nam vet go's around pestering women whilst a group who listen to the tune of Mastermind hunt him down) DEVIL HUNTER ( Strap your arm around your back Bingo ! instant severed arm effect ) CANNIBAL TERROR ( Afro cannibals in the jungle that consists of about 8 trees , its a backyard for Gods sake ) DON'T GO NEAR THE PARK ( "Help I'm being raped "Not to worry my amulet will make things explode )
There are more believe me But these little films are some good examples.
