Cover scans to most of these are up on the John Burke site, but as this small area of the Vault has been a bit neglected recently, I thought that I'd try and get the ball rolling with as many blurbs as possible...may entice you in to the wonderful world of Mr Burke! Avon (1968)Once Upon a Time there were two girls. Yvonne and Brenda. They live in Slagheap, England. If you call that living. There was just one thing for them to do. And they did it. They came, they saw, they conquered: London.

Pan (1963)Ginnie - soft and crazy, teetering between bliss and despair from one moment to the next. Men flocked to her like iron filings to a magnet.
and Billa - harder, more capable, at least on the surface - but now she was pregnant...
Both 'wanted out', to escape from their jungle of Soho clubs and revue-bars, slick men and cool music and 'liquor' at five pounds a bottle. How each clutched at a passing straw is the story, unforgettable, funny, sad and bitingly realistic of -
THE WORLD TEN TIMES OVER

Pan (1962)'Bloody Teds...'
There were four of them in the dock at the Old Bailey - Stan, Ginger, Barney, Billy...
Were they thugs whose sharp suits and winklepickers were the uniform of violence...whose nights out had been one long rampage of vandalism, culminating in robbery and murder?
Or were they just youngsters dressed up for a night on the town, whose natural high spirits had earned them the inevitable and damning label of 'bloody teds?'
Barbed with disturbing realsim... Charged with suspense... Topical as today's headlines...

John Burke - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Pan, 1968) A real slimline effort. Burke gets the job done in 100 pages and four of them are are a photo insert. Piranha is 'Salems Lot by comparison. Haven't read it, not seen the film - give me a break. It's a bloody musical! - but from what i understand, it's a tragedy involving some likable fellow named the Childcatcher who fails to slaughter a family of rich do-gooders on account of their having a magic flying car.

Pan (1967)Why, his family wondered, wasn't Michael Tremayne more like his 'sensible' elder brother David? They couldn't know, of course, that when Michael got into trouble it was because David was pulling the strings.
Truth is they were both reckless, and in their restlessness wanted to do something really big. Like steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower, for instance...
No, it isn't impossible. Yes, they could, and it did, evolve a plan...
THE JOKERS is a masterly blend of suspense, ingenuity and comedy - impossible to put down until you discover whether the last laugh is on the law - or on the Jokers.

Fontana (1975)Beyond the Blue Mountains...
in 1892, Australia was a hard and hostile country, a pioneer land of squatters and ex-convicts where the law had no power and only the strong would survive.
Luke Firbeck was one of the strong ones. He learned to meet the brutality around him with violence of his own, to strike the first blow, to sweep his rivals from his path. For Luke wanted more than survival - he was determined to carve a kingdom out of the untamed bush...

Pan (1962)PeffThe ordeal of Private Potter
On an island in a state of emergency, a surprise attack is mounted by British Forces on a terrorist hideout. It fails, the quarry escapes and a soldier is killed - all due to the inexplicable behaviour of Private Potter.
Was Potter a coward - whose conduct warranted severe punishment?
A madman - who required hospital treatment?
Or a saint - who was above all human judgement?
Adult, compassionate, challenging, this novel explores a dramatic theme: the fate in a fighting army of the man who does not - who cannot - conform.

Thames Methuen (1986)'AF818. Paris. Khalid Khan.' That was all the phone call said. But it was a good tip off. heroin, several million pounds worth. Just like the others.
Why should the same man shop seven drug couriers, yet ask for nothing in return? Detective Seargents Miller and Collis (on the Fourth Floor at Scotland Yard) have the job of finsing out. Both of them desperately need a result. Collis is decidedly not in his governor's good books, and Miller, who has sacrificed his private life to his work, needs to know that it has all been worthwhile.
What the two find is a plan of such audacity as to defy belief - but they are there to see it unfold.
Authentic in detail, non-stop in pace, The Fourth Floor is a crime story in the breath-catching tradition of The Sweeny and Out.

Pan (1966)Total war in the world of big buisness...a world where the battlefield is a boardroom table and a woman's contacts count for more than her kisses.
Sir John Wilder means to be king of this air-conditioned jungle...but others have the same ambition. No holds are barred - you have to be utterly ruthless to win.
THE POWER GAME - the compelling novel of the award winning ATV series which gripped millions of viewers and was acclaimed by the critics.

Pan Books (1969)Lunar City, May, 2020
There are many ways of dying on the Moon and Bill Kemp knows them all. Tough, independent and broke, he lives dangerously by flying a ten-year-old space ferry across its vast silences.
Suddenly, a whirlwind of adventure brings new perils - blasting through space at 18000 mph; landing on an asteroid of solid sapphire; escaping from jail; navigating a moonbug across fearsome craters; cheating death from below ground and above infinity - as Bill seeks revenge for two lovely girls - the living and the dead... Signet (Feb 1970)SPACE BELONGS TO THE RICH
Giant corporations control the colonies on the Moon and Mars. Travel is limited to a few safe 'Milk Runs'. Exploration is ended - perhaps forever.
But one maverick pilot, Bill Kemp, still dreams of reaching the outer planets beyond the asteroid belt. Even though his leaky space-ferry is condemned and the corporations are trying to have him grounded, Kemp has a plan that will change the very shape of the Solar System and catapult him to Jupiter and beyond!Sounds like two different films!

Pan (1969)Nicki lived a nightmare of guilt and remorse... It has started when she was little, when the painted hoofs smashed down and her father died, and then it went on and on as she grew up - in a bedlam of music and bright lights when she was asleep, in a relentless hammering of her imagination when she was awake - driving Nicki to stab her mother's lover in a frenzy of terror...
In a remand home where other girls had horrifying problems, Nicki wouldn't tell. Some of them talked about the past. Nicki couldn't. But still they kept asking, girls and the psychologists alike. Probing, bullying, lashing the nightmare back into terrible life.
Until Nicki knew she must escape - anywhere, by any means...
