Interviewing Dez Skinn in front of a live audience was an experience. Fortified by ale we ran a Powerpoint of Dez' publishing career from his fanzine days with Eureka through to Warrior and beyond. He brought along many of his original *dummy* mags for pitching purposes - I got to see the House of Hammer original pitch with art from Tomb of Dracula used ! Asked about the alleged burning of hundreds of copies of issue one of House of Hammer - Dez confirmed he did it !! After Dez had resurrected Monster Mag he thought the next best thing would be a Hammer magazine to utilize his posse of writers. Being based on Wardour street it didn't take long for Dez to meet Michael Carreras and strike a deal. When the magazine was cancelled Dez bought the rights to all the material produced but not rights to the name - that obviously resided with Hammer. He did get the rights to Halls of Horror which of course surfaced a few years later . All of Brian Lewis painted covers were lent to Hammer for their proposed London Dungeon style exhibit. They've not been seen since . Dez Skinn remains the Godfather of British Comics - a veritable publishing Gene Hunt ! KC Glad it went well for you, ade. Where's the interview going to show up?

It was *live* - you had to be there! We did have a recorder running though - but I'm not sure that's for print or online as Dez might be doing more one man shows in Brighton and Ireland.

The Dez Skinn roadshow sounds great- it's a shame no-one appears to have recorded it or videoed it as I'm sure it would be fascinating.
The story of James Warren's stamping out of Dez Skinn's attempts to launch Halls of Horror into the US is told in Trash Fiend, a book I mentioned elsewhere.
Re The Monster Mag issue 2 discussion- in the 90s there used to be a yearly fanzine called Magazine of the Movies which rounded up all of the horror related fanzines and mags that appeared in that year. It ran to about 5 issues and dedicated a fair amount of space to the Monster Mag 2, myth or fact debate, and included reproductions of the French issue 2.
My copies of Mag of the Movies are long gone, but just in case one of you plucky vaulters might have copies lying around and had forgotten about it...

We did have a recorder running for the duration - but I'm not sure what will happen to it yet.

Dez was at one point going publish the Warren mags for the english market. He tells of meeting Jim Warren at an expensive London hotel and Peter Cushing joining them for tea.

Thanks for all your nice words. I'm surprised Ade hasn't mentioned my shiny new website which should answer most of your questions about Warren, Monster Mag, the HoH title change, S(h)andor and the like. With apologies for being such a blatant plugster, here's a link to the relevant bit: dezskinn.com/warner-williams-2/But be warned, it's over 60,000 words and I still haven't finished 1979! In fact Phil Nutman commented on its Forum page dezskinn.com/blog/2010/08/06/general-discussion-your-views/ that his wife was furious when he turned up an hour late for dinner because he got so caught up in it! You have been warned. Dez Skinn

welcome Dez, really pleased to hear from you! i can see how easily that could happen, matter of fact i'm planning on spending some serious time there myself. It was Halls Of Horror that particularly did it for me, but i got dead lucky recently when my wife was having a rummage through a box of old comics and mags and turned up three issues of Warrior - a magazine i'd not set eyes upon until then. Looks to me like right now would be ideal for the second coming of V. David Lloyd Gary Leach

Those were nice comics. I have a couple of them, unfortunatly not the whole run. They must have been very interestingly at the time. Even today they seem to convey a sense of something new and exciting, but maybe I am talking bull and it is all hindsight. Still it was interesting to see the first version of Moore´s Miracleman or crazy stuff like Pressbutton.

I still have an almost complete set stashed away, though I still had to buy the V For Vendetta graphic novel to find out how it ended. No, you're right, andy, Warrior was new and exciting. I know what I like, and what I like - thrashes! Damn shame the corporate juggernaut of Marvel managed to squish it, even though they actually lost their case. if only they would release a graphic novel of the Bojeffries Family, I could die content (well, all right, I admit I'd be back within a week, but the principle holds true).
