Of late there appears to have been far too much in the way of informed discussion and lively exchanges of opinions on this board, so it's evidently time for some shameless self promotion. And a request for help.
Issue 10 of The Fanatic has just gone to print. It'll be the best issue yet as most of the content and all of the design has been looked after by people other than my good self!
Contents- Interviews with John Harvey about his pulp fiction days and legendary cover artist John Holmes (courtesy of All Things Horror) Pieces on the Casca Eternal Mercenary 'men's adventure' series, Ballantine Adult Fantasy, Frankenstein (courtesy of Andreas), NEL and sex education pulps, real-life occultist and pulp hack Gerald Suster, and loads of letters.
Issue 11 is shaping up to be an artist special, with interviews with Ian Miller, Tony Masero and Justin Todd complete. A mammoth Bruce Pennington career spanning overview in progress (30 pages of correspondence and counting!) and fingers crossed that All Things Horror has worked his magic with Cecil Smith- legendary NEL art director of the 1970s to secure a chat.
Issue 12 is planned as an all horror special, intended to be the ultimate guide to British pulp horror, shamelessly stealing all of the fab bibliographies that have been developing here and more.
But it's with issue 11 I'm looking for some help, particularly in terms of developing checklists for Tony Masero, Ian Miller, William Francis Phillips and Justin Todd. Could we kick off some threads devoted to these artists in which we could list their paperback covers and build up checklists? I'm more than happy to publish what I've amassed so far and for people to build on it from there? What do you reckon?

Crikey! How do I subscribe?
I've a vague and probably erroneous memory that Bruce Pennington has some connection with Australia - is that right?

This will give you the details and a taste of what's gone before, James, and i'm sure you'll agree, it really is top stuff. Often exceptional articles and interviews in head on collision with galleries of some of the most beautiful/ strange/ horrific/ sleazy or just plain bizarre paperback covers known to man. Paperback FanaticAnyway, Justin, a quick scrutiny at the contents of #10 and, well, it looks absolutely fascinating but even above all this talk of Mens Adventure, "Nel and the Sex Education pulps?", Frankenstein and Co, two words leapt off the screen: Gerald Suster!!!! Is this the start of the Paperback Fanatic goes witchy phase? I do hope so. Perhaps you could feature Suster's fellow serious occultists turned pulpsters Jack Shackleford and Eric Erickson at a later date? But it's with issue 11 I'm looking for some help, particularly in terms of developing checklists for Tony Masero, Ian Miller, William Francis Phillips and Justin Todd. Could we kick off some threads devoted to these artists in which we could list their paperback covers and build up checklists? I'm more than happy to publish what I've amassed so far and for people to build on it from there? What do you reckon? Will kick up some threads over next few days, unless someone else wants to. I've just added one for Justin Todd, although i'm certain we did him quite recently - mr things-horror will know. Where do you want the checklists/ galleries/ etc? The seriously under-performing Paperback Covers best & worst seems as good a place as any, but if you want them all in this section, just say the word.

Gerald Suster, LEGEND! (Didn't we have a thread on him, and THE HANDYMAN nasty, on the old British Anthology Hell site?)
I met him three or four times through the Machen Society and once wrote a pseudonymous counterblast to his nutty article "Arthur Machen---SATANIST?" (Faunus #2 1998). Still, he was a real gent in person, but apparently if you crossed him he was likely to send you magical handwritten curses in the post. He was something to do with the OTO.
Doubtless you've all seen the "Devil Teacher!" sting from a 1989 News of the World? If not if it's easily found on google images by typing in his name.

Gerald Suster, LEGEND! (Didn't we have a thread on him, and THE HANDYMAN nasty, on the old British Anthology Hell site?) Mark S. there's at least five on here to be getting on with: The BlockThe Devil's MazeThe ElectThe HandymanThe ScarLegend is right, Mark. Fairly combustible by all accounts, not one to suffer occult poseurs gladly and more power to him for that. Sorting through me old Goth Soc mags quite recently, i was delighted to see he'd written in taking issue with a chap who'd failed to be overly impressed with his book on the Tarot. Suster, inordinately peeved, duly gave him both barrels only for the fellow in question to sneakily return with a devastating riposte the following issue, whereupon Suster promptly died, effectively terminating the frank exchange of insults just when it was getting juicy. I must dig it out for some quotes! And now, he's going to be celebrated in Fanatic! Just off to google 'Devil Teacher' ...
