I'm hoping this is the right section of the forum to post this lol. Just wanted to say Hi to everyone. I've been a reader of the main page of Vault Of Evil for a while now, and though it's about time I said hello to you good folks ) Sites like this are invaluable for finding out about authors, especially those who are difficult to find info on in other places.

Welcome Mr. Turnip (there must be a story behind your name?). Thank you for joining and, especially, for sharing your views on the Wordsworths, Wakefield, Rolt and fellow greats.
I hope you don't mind, but i'm going to move this to the top of the board where once we had loads of welcome posts. Came the fateful day when some mega-brain accidentally deleted 'em and ever since then I get the feeling people must think we're dead anti-social!
Have fun!
And if any of our other members want to (re)introduce themselves, please do so (as long as you're not intent on spamming us to death, that is).

Alas, there is no story behind the name. Although I've always found turnips to be an amusing vegetable (probably due to overdosing on Blackadder during my youth) and their abject unholiness has always piqued my curiosity.
I've just re-read Strange Event In The Life Of Schalken The Painter, which I swear only gets scarier each time I read it. I think I prefer the ending of the shortened version of the tale, but the cumulative effect that the story achieves in its original incarnation is masterful. There is no doubt in my mind, that Sheridan Le Fanu is my favourite practitioner of that delicate little art known as horror.

Ah, I saw the film version of that at the Fantastic Films Weekend last year for the first time - and it's absolutely superb! ;D

Welcome, Unholyturnip. That's a great username & it really should be used for a horror story title. Perhaps there's a lost nel out there somewhere, called The Unholy Turnip
