As most of you will know, Wordsworth Editions' highly competitive prices limit our ability to pay royalties, which is why we generally only print out of copyright books. However, in some cases it may be possible to print authors who are still in copyright. In addition to our other poll (see link below), we have created this poll for popular suggested authors who are still in copyright. So for this poll, which will also run until the end of February, please select your favourite 2 in-copyright authors and we'll see if a deal can be done to publish the 2 authors who receive the most votes. Once again, thank you for your interest and support! N.B. We had many suggestions for Sax Rohmer, but from our initial research it seems that unfortunately he would be beyond our budget. Choosing two from that five is worse than the 'your favourite Pan Horror cover' challenge, as, unquestionably, they should all be in print, but i've gone for Wakefield and L. T. C. Rolt. I was pretty certain HRW would make the shortlist, and in terms of sales, i think you'll be onto a winner with him, but surprised and delighted to find Rolt has made the cut. Sleep No More is a masterpiece. If we start getting spammed to death again, then i'll have to change it back, but I've modified this section of the board to enable guest posts while the polls are in progress (you'll only have to register if you want to post elsewhere on Vault ). LATER EDIT: I've changed it back, not due to spam but simply because there's no facility for guests to vote in the polls, which rather defeats the object! So, sorry guests - i'm afraid you'll have to register to vote, but at least that way you'll be entered into the lucky dip. Don't forget to vote in the Out of Copyright poll while you're here!

I went for Wakefield and Rolt as well, although if anyone's listening they should know I'd buy the Burrage as well if it was in the bookshop.

Only went for Rolt. Would floss my teeth with my own pubes if it saw the light of day!

Well, i'm sure they'll be delighted to hear that, Mr. M. Thanks for sharing!
Shows you how tough this is. I can think of very few circumstances in which i'd be faced with the prospect of seeing Burrage and Walpole back in print and not vote for it to happen! The only reason I've left Machen out of the equation is because I believe his 'best' horror stories are a little easiest to find than Wakefield's or Rolt's, though i'm sure Mark might have something to say about that!

Voted for Rolt because, even though I have a copy of "Sleep No More" that I picked up for £5 somewhere, I think it needs to be available to a wider audience. Also went for Machen, purely because I don't think I have anything by him.

Voted for Rolt because, even though I have a copy of "Sleep No More" that I picked up for £5 somewhere, I think it needs to be available to a wider audience. That's why i'm taking my time over the out of copyright selections, Lurks. I've a devil on one shoulder telling me to vote selfish and an angel on the other demanding i be a big martyr and vote for the few titles i already have copies of but which are currently only available in REALLY EXPENSIVE specialist editions. Such is a measure of the epic sacrifices i've made in the name of horror fiction. So where's my BFS life achievement award then, you jealous *@!&*** jealous jealous rotters? P.S. Should Rolt win through, i've a copy of John Hadfield's The Saturday Book #16 (Hutchinson, 1956) which includes Rolt's essay The Passing Of The Ghost Story. It might make for nice bonus material?

Voted for Wakefield. His stuff can only be obtained for 50 dollars minimum a book these days, and most of those are out of print too. I had to dish out 400 kč (around 20 dollars) just to have the thing delivered through a library and over 40 for trips to said library, because they demanded a study in person. Hes realy needed to make a comeback, seeing how hard it is to find his work in the US and how impossible it is outside of it, besides a few pieces in out of print anthologies, anyway.

To the Rohmer: there are stil titles which are out of copyright and very hard to obtain. Like his "Tales of Secret Egypt" .

I do wish Rolfe wouldnt win, I'd prefer to see Burrage, seeing as its 100% impossible for me to buy any book from him at the moment.

I'm sure it's not all that important who wins, as all five authors are clearly in Wordsworth's long-term plans. You may just have to wait a little longer to see the three runners up back in print is all. Anyhow, there's just under two weeks to go until the polls close and i'm thinking we should try and drum up more interest. Many of us either run or contribute to far bigger boards & blogs than this one, so why not give the Wordsworth polls on the BHF, BFS, Shocklines & Co.? As mentioned, people will have to register with us to vote (oh, the stigma!), but they can always delete their account in March once their names are entered in the lucky dip!

I went for Wakefield and Rolt, simply because I a) think they're the best two and b) they're out of print in any medium.
Machen is still available in paperback from the U.S. and in hardback in the U.K. from Tartarus. Similarly, Walpole is still easy to get in hardback in this country from Tartarus. A.M. Burrage I'm simply not that keen on. But Rolt in particular, next to A.N.L. Munby, is one of the most sought after of the Jamesian horror writers. Wakefield can be hit or miss, but when he hits he's one of the best.
