That Alan Lee cover is wonderful. It has a strong touch of Sidney Paget about it, which is pretty appropriate for a Conan Doyle collection.

It's a great choice of story to illustrate too. I don't know why, maybe because it's entirely bereft on any hint of the supernatural, but The New Catacombs has been largely overlooked by horror anthologists when, it seems to me, it's just about the nastiest tale he wrote this side of the splendid, pointlessly spiteful The Leather Funnel.

So, the "mystery" stories are the ones which are......filler? I remember reading and being monumentarily disapointed by The Beetle colector. They didnt need the guy as a beetle expert,but only as somebody to blab his way into someone's confidence and then help hold him down when he gets a fit. And Doyle didnt even handle the mad man's rage , nor the ending where he "recovered"-,yes, take away every possible point of merritt why dont you?
