Rev Hubert Venables - The Frankenstein Diaries (Hutchinson, 1980) Amazingly, there are still some people out there who think that Frankenstein is all made up, a silly Gothic horror story by an impressionable young woman after one too many fierce laudanum sessions with Byron, Shelley, Dr. Polly and Claire Clairmont. Those of us in the know can always point to Rev Hubert Venables translation of Viktor Frankenstein's entirely genuine diaries - lavishly illustrated with intricate illustrations by his own hand - and, as if more proof were needed, a clipping from a German newspaper reporting on one of the monster's grisliest murders! Haven't made much progress with it yet, but according to one reviewer i'm in for "an incredible and somewhat disturbing book." Clearly Ken Russell and Stephen Volk can consider themselves vindicated over their misunderstood documentary Gothic.
