The first copies of Filthy Creations # 3, edited by Steve Goodwin Rog Pile, have reached some contributors today; others are on their way. Illustrations by me. In this issue, Better To Travel Hopefully... by Franklin Marsh. Heads or Tails by Coral King. The Mound by Daniel McGachey. Daemonia of Swan Man by Noah Brown. The Standing Man by Peter Coady. Strange Fruit by Craig Herbertson. There are actually two versions of this one, a "day" and "night" version. This of course is the "night" version and the one I expected to use, but the "day" version seemed to put the emphasis better where it belonged - on the murdered children. With this drawing of Craig's very grim story lying about, no wonder I need anti-depressants! Anyway, for future reference, you can have copies of FC 3 with either version, as you prefer.

Latest issue of Cheese Lover Quarterly looks great!
Cal's illos are suitably moody. The swan attack one is partic powerful and love the greys on the cover. Style a cross between Eddie 'From Hell' Campbell and Ghastly Graham Ingels in classic EC swamp mayhem mode!

The first copies of Filthy Creations # 3, edited by Steve Goodwin Rog Pile, have reached some contributors today... This makes it seems like we've merged into one single entity, Rog - and sometimes, while working on this, I'm not sure if that isn't the case. I still think we should try and get a sponsorship deal with either fluoxetine or sertraline... Now that's what I call service! I bet we're the only horror-themed cheese periodical on the market that offers their readers that sort of choice. That's why we're still no. 1 in the macabre dairy field! Cal's illos are suitably moody. The swan attack one is partic powerful The Swan Man picture looks even better in the magazine I think. Rog has done a great job on this issue. He put in a lot of work and it's really paid off. Can you tell I'm excited about this one? And I've hardly taken any drugs at all today!

Thanks Rog - it arrived this morning. I'm in Christmas dumbing down mode (i began December 26th last year) but I'll try and reacquaint myself with those I've read and check out the new-to-me's over the holiday. Two things have greatly cheered me up so far: "Another chilling tale fromFranklin Marsh: Master of the Macabre!" and, perhaps even more, the shared credit "Co-edited by Steve Goodwin & Rog Pile". They said it couldn't be done ....
Well done Rog, Steve, Franklin, Lurks, Peter, Craig, Bushwick and Coral!

Glad more of them are making it through the Christmas post. It was Steve's idea to use the Better to Travel Hopefully illustration for the cover. Originally I'd thought we'd use the one for Coral King's Heads or Tails, but of course Steve was right and the BTTH picture better-fitted the "real nasty" FC that I wanted to do. Charles Black alerted me to Coral's story online. Sean Parker's Character, plus Steve's The Lodge (illustrations and DTP work already done) and 4th instalment of Franklin's The Horror on Dreadstone Moor (which proved too long to conclude this issue as expected) will be in issue 4, which will also have another of Noah's stories and final entries to be announced. The illustration for Heads or Tails was the first to be completed. With the one for Peter Coady's The Standing Man, I wanted to show someone standing between life (the world beyond the window) and death. There was originally a clock drawn in the room, but I decided it wasn't necessary. The illustration for Daemonia of Swanman was the first that I inked - all others have been just pencilled - and I'm relieved that it worked OK. I don't think Noah will be visiting the Vault until after the holiday. The drawing for Craig's Strange Fruit was undoubtedly the most harrowing that I've drawn. And it's a very nasty story! The drawing for Daniel McGachey's The Mound came out more successfully than I'd hoped. The caption beneath it is another of Steve's touches as he thought it looked sort of retro. It was a bit exasperating keeping quiet about the work being done. It had been taking me so long that it finally seemed best to keep shut about it till completed. Steve agreed that it was a good idea - he was the only one to know - and he stopped me falling at the last fence when the suspense was finally getting too much. For that and all the other editorial decisions and DTP work he put in, Thanks, Steve. More copies of FC 3 will go out over the holiday if I stay sober enough.

They said it couldn't be done .... Just telling it like it is as far as the Marvellous Mr Marsh is concerned. As for me and Rog working together it seems to work fine as long as we're both heavily sedated. Progress is slow but mellow. For that and all the other editorial decisions and DTP work he put in, Thanks, Steve. What Rog is very kindly not mentioning is that it would've been ready a couple of weeks ago if I hadn't kept falling asleep...

Received my copy yesterday morning and it looks great. I love the illustrations, Rog, and BTTH is an incredibly striking cover image. And, I must admit, it's going to hard to wipe the grin off my face after reading the ludicrously over flattering description of myself in the Filthy Creators piece.

Some thoughts re the latest and most excellent issue of Filthy Creations...
I got that indefinable feeling when I picked it up that it just felt right. The issue was 'pure' and streamlined- no longer a newsletter for Vault of Evil, it stood independently as a top-notch fiction mag.
Better to Travel Hopefully. A great pulpy tone and welcome provider of a Weird Tales sensation, although I'm not quite sure if I 'got' it. There were so many good ideas present I felt more as if I was reading the author's prepatory notes, rather than the finished article. Loved the Amazonian setting which I think FM could have milked even more. Lines such as "two months collecting spiders for your welcome" are genius, and with a simple remark about a character's teeth, I instantly visualised him, so much to praise. Good, could have been great.
Heads or Tails I gritted my teeth with the introduction of the rather clichéd lead character, but Coral King soon had me forgetting this initial reservation with his/her intriguing 'tail'. This felt like two stories mutated into one- a good short sharp shocker mixed in with a unique and refreshing idea. I'm not sure if the twist as to the two lead character's relationship, and the shrunken head quite matched up. I had to re-read it to understand the twist (which is perfectly well explained to be honest) and I think I missed it because I was expecting a very different ending- I was very taken by the character of 'the head' and felt this wasn't used to its full potential. Maybe I missed the symbolism?
The Mound Sometimes the destination is not as important as the journey, and I think that applies to Daniel's contribution. Excellent unravelling of the grisly denouement.
Daemonia of Swan-Man This was suitably shocking. I was gripped and surprised throughout this brutal piece, particularly as I am scared of swans. Noah can certainly grab the attention and deliver a jaw-dropping set-piece, it will be interesting to see how he can develop this into longer more complex tales. Or maybe he will become The Ramones of Filthy Creations, which would be no bad thing.
Strange Fruit Strongest story in this issue. Inventive, twisting and impossible to second-guess. I always approve of any story which does have a sub-text should you choose to look, but can stand on its own two feet and be judged solely as a narrative.
The Horror on Dreadstone Moor Really starting to pick up. Great characterisation including the rocking reverend which reminded me a little of Rev Lionel Fanthorpe (although he is a black belt and weight-lifting champion and unlikely to be quite so cowardly). A nice gentle tone of humour yet still gripping enough to have you turning the pages to reveal the next event. What has Elizabeth in store for our hero? Can't wait!
And a very generous and unexpected back page advert!
In future issues I would welcome a few more insights from the authors as to the creation of their stories. Possibly after each individual story, or as part as an afterword? I think this really helps contextualise and I just plain enjoy it.
Apologies if I do offend anyone with my comments, they are intended to be constructive and are only my opinion.
Justin.

Wonderful illustrations! Since I'm new round here, can somebody tell me - what is Filthy Creations and how do I get hold of it?

In the absence of the editors and contributors, Filthy Creations is a fiction magazine edited by Rog & Steve and featuring the work of Vault members and their friends. Many of the stories originate from the Workshop of Filthy Creations section near the bottom of the board. The third issue was published just before Christmas 2007 and features original fiction from Franklin, Coral, Craig, Bushwick, Lurker and Peter C. It's best you PM Rog for details of how to order a copy or perhaps he or Steve will be good enough to post the updated info on here?
