Yeah, good luck Charles and Des and commiserations (or perhaps that should be congratulations?) to Justin whose Paperback Fanatic deserved to make the final cut at the very least. Have a care, BFS! I may well boycott future events at Ye Olde Cock Tavern over this scandalous omission, and then you'll all be sorry.
RC is nailed on to win best novel. In the absence of Moody, I hope Steve Upham wins best artist.
The Vault awards. It can only be a matter of time .....

Got an email from Steve Upham last night (I think he sent out a whole bunch) and he's still pretty damn ill but is resting at home now. Vault awards... go on, I double dare you...

I enjoyed Grin very much indeed: he obviously had his Ancient Images head on for this one and I love all the synopses of imaginary film. Reading the internet stuff, I couldn't help but think: 'now here's a guy who's been on the end of a flame war' - he got it just so. He lost me a little toward the end - through no fault of the book: I wasn't at my "best" - so I've scheduled a rematch for the end of the year. But, yeah. Wonderful and disturbing (in every sense) stuff, and dear old Warren and Bebe Halloran are possibly the scariest double act since Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde. As to Tubby Thackeray, I kept envisioning him as the fat guy from a Welcome To Skegness poster as reworked and immortalised on an old Fortean Times cover. I'll see if I can dig it out.
Awards .... well, I'm not keen on 'em as a rule 'cause I wonder if sometimes they do more harm than good, the old boys network patting each other on the back, congratulating each other on how swell they all are, etc., etc. But I kind of like the idea of a Vault 'Pierce Nace Award For Literary Excellence' banner we could present to the horror authors, publishers, artists, sites, boards, blogs & Co. we most appreciate.

Yeah, I'm not big on them myself, but maybe the Vault version would be a bit of fun... the 'Golden Crab' award or something...

It's certainly something to bear in mind when it comes to our end of year round up - provided, of course, we last that long. Used to do something similar in vamp-zine days, although ours weren't the kind of commendations anyone would be overjoyed to receive. Funnily enough, I believe Mr. Campbell has had some small dealings with the fellow who trounced all comers in the prestigious ******** of the century award ....

Good luck to Charlie & to Des
I think the Vault award should indeed be a crab's claw, but it should be holding something in its pincer. Something human.
