Love the idea of promotion/ relegation from the list. Has there been a further update since Ramsey's book was published?
No. And I haven't been keeping an up-to-date list (which would be huge by now). There was some talk in the Everlasting Club of a joint project, but I suspect that even with several people working on it, the task would just be too great.
Inspired by this thread, I just had a look back over Hugh's original published listing in the first issue of Ghosts & Scholars (1979). A mere four pages - and one of them devoted entirely to Jim Pitts' gorgeous Count Magnus illustration. Would probably take a book the size of The Black Pilgrimage & Other Explanations to contain an expanded contemporary version.
From the first, I set myself against "literature"; the story was the thing, and no amount of style could persuade me to select a story that lacked genuine, unadulterated horror. For those who wanted something high-brow there was plenty.
