Ooops! Sorry. Ever since I did that post about the good doctor I had a feeling I'd got something wrong.

Reviews in Prism (Summer 2008) of the Black Book and of the Second Black Book are a bit prissy.

Worse than prissy, they smack of the uninformed and the uneducated trying to 'rise above' such obviously distasteful material and therby show that they are 'better than all this'. These reviews are doubly disappointing becaused they occur in Prism but like all such waste they should immediately consigned to the colostomy bag of forgotten irrelevancies. These books are marvellous. Black Static said so, and so did my Dad.

Agreed, John. On the plus side, he seemed to enjoy THE PIT by Rog Pile.

I've not read the reviews - no longer a BFS member as it's too expensive - but that actually sounds like a compliment to me! Didn't the Pan Books tend to elicit the same kind of response? Each to their own, I say. We know what we like here, don't we? ;D ;D ;D

I have to admit, I wondered if I'd read the same books as the reviewer. Exactly what do people want from horror, these days?

You can't please everyone.
I haven't seen my copy of Prism yet - it must still be in the post, so my comments can only be vague.
You have to remember, too, that not all members of the BFS are as enthusiastic as most of us are about horror. Some - the die-hard fantasists - absolutely hate it, especially the kind of horror, as Caroline correctly points out, inspired at least in part by the Pan series.

Who was the reviewer? I hope it was someone I really annoyed at that Ye Olde Cock Tavern thing the other week! I'll bet they were made up with mr. fanatic's comments too. Blooming dark fantasy snobboes!

I did a quick google on him. I think he's a dark fantasist. He also writes for the BBC comedy series Call my Bluff, though what that entails I can't hazard a guess (the writing, I mean). He also does articles for The Guardian, which has damned him eternally in my eyes at least for this one fact alone. I'll supply the pitchforks (well, I've got one anyway) David

Not in the BFS, so haven't seen them.
I suppose a negative review was bound to happen sooner or later.
