Had BBoH on 'the list' for awhile, this thread has convinced me to take the plunge and i'll grab it on my next trip to amazon. when black static was in its third alternative guise it was available in the virgin megastore on piccadilly circus, don't know if that's still the case as i now have a subscription.

Well done, Charles and Des. Pity I can't vote any more as I'm no longer a BFS member (too expensive!). There are some other good titles on the list too I see - eg. Stephen Gallagher's collection "Plots And Misadventures". Also, pleased to see Bryan Talbot's "Alice In Sunderland" under best artist - that's an amazing book. And if Ramsey's "The Grin of The Dark" doesn't win best novel, I'll eat my hat!

And Paul's up for best artist, and Justin's Paperback Fanatic empire is on the list too. Belated happy birthday by the way, Justin.

I noticed that review yesterday Chas. The reviewer is actually a very interesting bloke having been in a psychedelic band in the late 60s and involved with various others since. Although he has now retired (and the cat farm is a place where he looks after abandoned cats) he still lectures and talks about music and is writing a book to do with studio techniques (I think). I've got an e-mail address for him and will be writing to ask him about his interest in Brit Horror Anthos and whether it's my story that's the weak one in the BBoH.

" .... Without a doubt, this is one of the best collections I have read in recent years and I hope that Mr. Black will choose to release "Volume II" and beyond. Obviously, he took a great deal of care in his selections and, just as obviously, a lot of "love" went into putting this book together ....."
Well said, that man! And good luck with the BFS award, Dr. T. I'd love to see you and Paperback Fanatic win! Can't believe Joe Roberts (Mammoth Modern Ghost Storieswas overlooked in the best artist category. Much as I like Les Edwards' work, I don't rate his grinning skull for Best New Horror 18 as the best thing he's ever done and certainly not above his Mammoth Monsters cover (which isn't nominated).

Ben, The two stories in the BHF Books of Horror feature Doc L. Those that Dwell in Dark Places in #1 The Shadow in the Stacks in #2 Relax Craig. You're not in that one! You get a good review in the new Black Static. I wondered if anyone here was familiar with Ultimate Spinach. Pass on my regards if you do contact him, FM.

Thank God. I thought my words were coming back to haunt me.
I didn't find a bad story in either bunch. Some had more personal appear than others but the overall standard was high.

Benedict, many thanks for the kind words about "Shalt Thou..?" and "The Crimson Picture". I'm delighted you enjoyed them.
As Charles points out, Dr Lawrence did indeed appear in "The Shadow in the Stacks" in the Second BHF Book of Horror. He's not in "They That Dwell In Dark Places" in the first volume, however, though the story inhabits the same fictional "universe" as the Lawrence stories and does have connections to "Stacks" and "The Crimson Picture" (as well as another couple of stories that were originally written as radio scripts and I'm currently rewriting as short stories).
I'm rather fond of Lawrence, so I'm sure we'll be hearing from him again.
