NIGHT OF THE GARGOYLE! - cover art Bernie Wrightson Contents GARGOYLE EVERY NIGHT by Bernie Wrightson and Roy Thomas. I Wore THE MASK OF DROTHOR! - art Steve Ditko. MASTERMIND by Tom Sutton. I FOUND THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN - art Jack Kirby. Back in the mid 1970's the spinner racks were gorged with post code horror and mystery comics released by Marvel and DC. Marvel were nowhere as prolific in releasing anthology books as DC were - but CHAMBER OF DARKNESS and TOWER OF SHADOWS were two fine examples. The highlighted issue includes some terrific art - the Ditko and Kirby pieces are reprints from Timely's monster books ( Timely being Marvel before they became Marvel if you get me?). When you are talking about horror art - Bernie Wrightson owned the decade. His work on SWAMP THING was still to come - however having cut his teeth on DC's mystery books - Marvel enticed the budding superstar over to give their anthology books some clout. In many ways this is still formative work by Bernie - but you can see from the example below - there is a real understanding of form and an inate ability to capture atmosphere - even in this short 7 pager.
