I ordered that variant edition just because of the cover-at full size it should look amazing I love the idea of reading this backwards-since I'm familiar with the story I do find that I take a "drop the needle to the record" approach when I feel like a little Tomb of Dracula. Recently I was discussing the much beloved Dr. Sun with a pal that is FAR more a continuity follower than I ever will be. I had no idea that Dr. Sun re-appeared in the FF and even possessed H.E.R.B.I.E. Odd...but I sure do love Dr. Sun, I'll have to check that out. I don't think the Essentials have reached that storyline yet.

Hey David speaking of Essentials , is Conan available? I'm primarily interested in Barry Smith's run on the comic. I have one of those large format Treasury books that reprints some stuff - but I'd like to experience his emergence as a major comics artist through Conan (cheaply if poss).
Back to TOD. I try to read one or two issues at the end of the day ( around 3AM actually). I'm loving the familiarity of the series and reading back to front kind of reinforces the series in the memory.

There was a Conan Essential some years ago. It is imho out of print.
But Conan the Barbarian is curently reprinted in colour by Dark Horse in tpbs. Nine or so issues a book. With nice afterwords by its writer Thomas.
On the Dark Horse homepage you can look up which issues are in what tpbs. They already reprinted the first 120 or so issues.
Also Dark Horse is reprinting Savage Sword of Conan. This is in the Essential format. But they shrunk the magazine format. And there is no additional material, which makes this edition rather lacklustre. Not to mention that the cover reprints are even smaller than the magazine-content, and frankly they look like shit. But for reading only purposes this is okay. And it beats ebay-prices for the original 30 years old magazines.

Thanks for the info Andy. I'm aware of the DK stuff - though haven't actually looked through any - re-colored I believe? I was hoping for a b/w reprint of Barry's stuff in the vein of the Essentials line. There should be one - it's a crime if not!

I have one of the Conan Essentials and it does look very interesting in b/w for sure. I'll see if I can find one for you The Savage Sword reprints don't look great, but I agree-perfectly fine for reading copies of the Conan material. I would have liked the complete contents of those mags myself-but licensing would be a beast I bet-and Conan is the property that they are pushing.

How come DK got to reprint Marvel stuff? Obviously it's a REH issue. Interestingly I was reading about the copyright agrement over Red Sonya/Sonja recently.

Dark Horse got the Conan license. Just recently they started vol.2 after doing 50 issues. And they are doing major Howard stuff at the moment, starting Kane and Kull.
So they also bought the Marvel stuff - or whatever they did to get them - and started this extensive reprint programm. Interestingly some of the Red Sonja issues were omitted because of the rights tangle.
Their new Conan had it´s moments, they did it chronologically. They also did some adaptions of Howard originals like "The God in the Bowl" and "Rogues in the House". I guess this is a matter of taste, but some of storys were rather lame.
The Kane miniseries will be interesting, as it will be the third completed fragment of a Kane story Howard nver finished. "The Castle of the Devil" was completed by Ramsey Campbell, and I seem to remember there was also a comic version in Savage Sword in b/w.
Dark Horse also will reprint some of Warren´s horror comic. Creepy (or Eerie) in hardcover.
