They can be changed by the person who starts the thread. When you're typing a message, look at the "message icon" box above where you're typing. It will say "standard" and show the peace symbol. But if you open the sub-menu, you'll get a list of options, "thumbs up", "smiley", etc. Click one of these and it changes the icon which appears with your message.
Most forums are like that. I hadn't realised this one didn't have that before in fact!

Then again,when I try to do the Byronic flounces I inevitably get laughed at by chic Goths. You don't know the insecurity that follows when you don't look good in a purple velvet jacket.

Mr. Brain, there is nowt sinister in the peace symbol. The standard message icon was a boring blue page and I thought this looked more striking. Actually, all the message icons are on the dull side so I might change a few more when time permits.
