hello all,
my only truelly 'spooky' experience.
when i was living in middx i went to bed one night and woke up suddenly in the early hours convinced someone was standing in the corner staring at me and the ex. i was 100% sure there was someone there. thinking 'well i'd better do something here' i tried to get up...and couldn't move. tried to open my eyes to at least see the intruder (convinced i was about to be bludgeoned to death) but couldn't. lay there for about five minutes completely paralysed then snapped out of it. looked round no-one there. thought it was a very bad dream and went back to sleep. next morning i found my kitchen window wide open...
i've since found out that there is something called 'night terror' (i think) which is when you get caught in a groove between sleep and waking and feel like you're paralysed...

The nearest I've been to that was one night, some years ago, I "woke up" and saw someone stood by my bed in a trenchcoat, staring at me. The paralysis didn't last long, though. The next thing I knew I had rolled out from under the cover and hit the "figure" in the midriff with the flat sole of my foot. Which was when I awoke and realised I'd stamped the door of my wardrobe.

I haven't experienced Night Terrors, but remember an interesting documentary shown a few years back, which was actually more frightening than the horror film shown after it. The documentary discussed the terrifying human shape that sleepers thought threatened them, just as Ben describes. I found this site: Night Terrors Rescource Center, which seems to be the site of a lay-person trying to come to an understanding of his own sleep disorder. Here's a quote from it: After spending the last 20+ years of my life experiencing night terrors, I decided to find out more about this sleep disorder. I hope the following will help shed some light on the subject. The first thing I found was that this problem goes by a few different names. Sleep Terrors, Sleep Terror Disorder, Night Terrors, Pavor Nocturnus and then the mouthful DSM-IV AXIS I: 307.46 are just a few. This fact made it very difficult to do an internet search for more information. Another problem I ran into was that HSP (Hallucinatory sleep disorder) has some similarities to Night Terrors. I have included information about sleep paralysis to help you figure out which you may have.

You young fellas might not appreciate a discussion about "women's problems" in the Vault, but you've asked for it now ... Although I don't experience anything as severe as real night terrors (I remember seeing that documentary too, Rog), I've always had bad nightmares on and off for years. But over the last year or so I was alarmed when I started to get some very strange sleep disturbances - "nightmares" are the only thing I could call them, but they're nothing like the ones I'd had before. I often feel like I'm awake when it's happening, and they are incredibly disturbing. Sometimes I remember some parts of them, but most of the time I don't. I thrash around a lot, and I've also woken up yelling or screaming from some of these. Anyway - and here's the "women's problems" bit - it turns out it's a symptom of the menopause! So, ladies, you've got that to look forward to, and you young married gents - go easy on your ladies when they get to that stage. It's not very pleasant I can tell you!

Oh, by the way, just to add to the above, initially I thought it was due to the kinds of things I was reading before bedtime!

-Its only hapened that once (about 4 years ago) and i'm hoping it wont happen again!!
sleep and dreams etc. are very odd and you can see why writers of our bent are so drawn to them.

I don't usually swear but it seems I swear like a trooper when I sleep.Quite a few times lately I've woke up from nightmares, but now thanks to Carolinec I know what the cause is.the next time my husband has to wake me up I can tell him it's not ("those stupid books you read")his words, but the menapause.that will keep him quite for the next few years.

Absolutely, Mrs Mop! And I wasn't kidding when I said that. I'd gone to my doctor for something else, mentioned the nightmares to her, and her response was that it was hardly surprising given the state of my hormones at present. Hubby's been really well behaved, kind and considerate ever since - he daren't do anthing else!

I once woke up and saw John Thaw's face floating in my bedroom. It was green, and quickly vanished.
Later I found out that Ian Brady saw the green face of an old man, urging him to kill.
As documented in FROM HELL.
Inspector MORSE? Mors? death?
No, nothing is normal in my life.
John Thaw wasn't dead at the time I saw the face.
Hypnogogia!

Uncanny. In the only speaking part I ever had I had a dialogue with John Thaw. Just prior to going on set. I was walking past a little caravan in the centre of Manchester. Suddenly I was face to face with the man himself, clearly having crawled out of bed from his private garderobe. He was gentleman enough to say 'good morning' even though I probably looked like someone to studiously avoid.
I've worked it out. Your seeing the world through my eyes and we're living in an H G Wells tale...
