You want to hear something weird? I have become somewhat obsessed with the film THE GHOST TRAIN. I have been watching it off and on for years and especially since I bought the DVD. It was written by -yes you already know- Arnold Ridley of Dad's Army fame. One night, watching the film again, I noticed a poster in the waitng room where the characters spend most of the film. It was a poster for Weston Super Mare. First time I'd noticed it. I fell asleep watching it and woke up in the morning and turned the news on. That was the day the pier in Weston Super Mare burned down! Coincidence? Or am I insane? I went through a similar infatuation with The Ghost Train. I used to drive my friends up the wall because every time they came around with illegal downloads of the latest films, all I wanted to watch was my old home-made recording of The Ghost Train. I am cured now, though. My doctor suggested that I begin destroying anything I find that reminds me of the film, and burning piers is even more fun than watching the movie. I would add that I prefer the radio versions of Ridley's story - there were two radio versions made by the BBC. The film version of Ridley's story is more a vehicle for Arthur Askey than anything else. I admit his goldfish impression peering through a carriage window is good for a giggle! You will find the longer radio version is available from a link on this site, leading to my own 4shared cache. (a lot of other links on the radio page are now defunct as the Old Time Radio (OTR@154.CA) forum has moved twice)
