The Circus of Dr. Lao is an all time fave of mine. As is The Unholy City. I really wish he had written more. Meanwhile the only thing I found on my last trip into my very small town was this: The Blonde Cried Murder by the_junk_monkey, on Flickr Hey, that's still a pretty cool find. an old Mike Shayne is always good! take care. That's an odd looking cover for a Dracula Annual.

Read the first two on the plane back and finished Sarban in the evening - great book. my first reading of Sarban and was immensely impressed. If you liked The Sound of His Horn, then I strongly recommend both Ringstones and The Doll Maker. They're more restrained--particularly the latter--but I like them even better. I'm still waiting for an opportunity to land a copy of The King of the Lake (which I originally typed as Inhabitant of the Lake--two very different lakes, I imagine). The man certainly didn't mind letting the reader know what sorts of things got him hot and bothered.

Apparently he left behind a manuscript written in code. Now that should be interesting. That is tantalizing. I hope that some good cryptographers are on the case.

God help me, I couldn't resist these for $2 each at St Vinnies - they look unread: Having only got about half way through one recently I can understand that.

What i like in a book is either mindless formulaic mind candy or an unusual slant. Sarban definitely offers the latter. I thought his delivery was particularly good, the restraint you mention. He's definitely now on my extremely large wants list - damn you Vault....

In the states they weren't quite so God awful until he switched publishers (Ballantine) and went to DAW books. As a teen I thought, man, these are like bad porn without the sex! take care. Doug
