Technically fantasy but I've started the first three chapters and its kind of dark.

I also picked up three books by R. Scott Bakker in some trilogy about the Apocalypse. Naturally, you'd think that this was my kind of thing but after fifty pages I began scratching my head -too many characters, loads of thoughts, intuitions and emotions, swift changes of subject. feelings, discussion, conflict.

I turned to wikipedia to check out why (a) I wasn't enjoying the book one bit despite the rave reviews and (b) had no idea what was going on. Yup - female author strikes again. Call me a chauvinist but 9/10 times I can guarantee this reaction. As its a matter of taste I would say its not a matter of prejudice. There are certain female authors I think are wonderful and there are certain male authors I simply can't stick but mostly female authors do nothing for me.

A kind vault member pointed out that I have arsed this up monumentally. Bakker being male. To compound the idiocy Carmody's (hopefully still female) teen dark fantasy is actually extremely good. Definitely on the verge of horror as it deals with evil, gangs, fantastical symbols of good and has loads of horror elements.

Not the easiest book to read, but the beautiful Thole cover alone are worth the price.

I read the Worm Ouroboros in translation a long time ago - when I was young and the classics beckoned. I even read William Morris. Eddison really impressed me with his writing skills, his inclination for long descriptions of needless trivia which so slow down the narrative and still make a fantasy setting real. A style which has become old-fashioned and has acquired a bad name.

When I bought the rest of Eddison a while ago I read a few pages but couldn´t concentrate enough so I put it on the shelf. It is the same with Mervyn Peake or some of the more experimental rambling Moorcock like the Pyat books. I want to read them, but don´t have the required attention-span at the moment.

Nice haul Junkmonkey. I see you got Helen Simpson's Under Capricorn, which was made into one of Alfred Hitchcock's rare film failures. Simpson is an interesting author - Australian born, she was booted out of Oxford University for frequenting risque amateur plays. In the early 1930s she travelled around Europe collecting stories about vampires and witches, but I'm not sure if she published these anywhere. A scarce collection that contains some ghostlies and supernatural tales is The Baseless Fabric, though they're more Henry James than Monty, and a bit tedious. Sadly she died of cancer in her forties. I'm reading a novel of hers at the moment called The Desolate House, on the basis of an article on Simpson in CADS, which called it a "chiller." Nothing of the sort unfortunately - it's historical melodrama.

Likely doesn't fall into the classification of horror like some of the other books I've gotten, but I just ordered The Poison Belt by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Lost World (also not horror) is my favorite Doyle work, more than any of his Sherlock Holmes stuff, and in particular I love the Professor Challenger character, boisterous, lovable brute that he is, and so I'm very much interested in reading a different story with him in it.

Also, although I already have it, I'm interested in acquiring a copy of Richard Matheson's The Incredible Shrinking Man[/b] with its original title of just "The Shrinking Man," from before publishers changed it to reflect the film. In many ways I'm a purist, I guess, and it wouldn't bother me to have more copies of a book I already own, considering I have three of Eat Them Alive.

As to subject matter more appropriate for the site, now that I've gotten Slimer finally I've sort of run out of genuine pulp horror novels I actually want. I guess Squirm sort of interests me...

Few things better than picking up De Sade in a charity shop and being told you get three of those for a pound.

A Lovecraft and a nice copy of Classic Victorian & Edwardian Ghost stories for a quid. God it was great to be back in Blighty. Also got a couple of the old foursquare Tarzan books and a few other bargains

Amazing isn't it. It's a scary cover and there's a wee chatty talk about how nice Mr Lovecraft was.

Truthfully, most of these authors are virtually unknown to me, but I know I like horror and they were 50p each.

It was trying to find out about one of them which lead me to to this site.

The Poison Belt: Being an Account of Another Amazing Adventure of Professor Challenger by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle came in the mail earlier today. It's a very short novella, a direct sequel to The Lost World and a contender for one of the single longest book titles I own. This is the title on the cover of the version I have, anyway, published by Bison Books. Most everywhere else (including Wikipedia) just calls it "The Poison Belt."
