Sorry Dem I've gone all sf on you. I'll try and correct that shortly. Bear Alley has a great new Lensman cover gallery up - anyone read this series ? - I always felt a little intimidated - looks right clever stuff to me. bearalley.blogspot.com/kc

As you might come to expect I was that sad bastard. Read all of those you have up on the blog. Strange thing is I never really understood them. I don't know if its a cultural/historical perspective or what but I could never feel at ease with the goodies. Although I wasn't on the side of the bad guys nor did I ever get to grips with what they were supposedly trying to acheive. I have vague memories at times of it being like that fifties series about prohibition (forget the name) set in space.
In some ways they are like a series of gradually increasing boxes. You start off by making a tiny makeshift spaceship out of mecanno. You beat an adversary by being a genius, stealing his ship in the process . From that ship you gradually go upwards until your technology resembles a quantum mechanics equation set next to the sums of an abacus.
One strong memory was a scene where the hero has to take a drug. Once taken for the rest of his life he is afflicted with the need to try it again. Its a very powerful chapter.
