Not yet Ben, but weirdly I've picked up two of his books recently (one is The McDead) because they looked like yer old-fashioned pulp novels. Worth a go, then?

bruens stories in both the 'brooklyn noir' and 'london noir' anthologies are pretty good as well. i might try and pick up 'dublin noir' which he edited but 'birmingham noir' editted by joel lane is giving me a stronger siren call!

No, Ben, it's the second. I have (or did have) the third The McDead. Must have a look.

Loving The McDead. Seems there's a couple of others with these characters out there, with great one word pulp titles like Blitz and Vixen.

The McDead - Ken Bruen. DoNotPress 2000.
Considering this was written in 2000, it felt to me like a throwback. Short, manic, enjoyable, nuts, cops acting as badly if not worse than the crims they're chasing, it was great. The Sweeney for the noughties on speed. Great characters - DS Brant is someone you just wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of - the whole thing just zooms along, all manner of odd events dovetailing nicely. I enjoyed its predecessor, Taming The Alien as much, and need to seek out the others. The chapter titles are incredible.

^and brant apparantly makes inpsector in the later books!!!
i finished 'blitz' in a morning and thought it was even better than 'the mcdead', brant is brilliant (again) and the development of the other coppers is great.

apparantly they've filmed 'Blitz' with Jason Statham as Brand...
read 'the gaurds', about bruens ex-guarda PI. good stuff but not as manic and great as the RnB books.

ken bruen's 'Jack Taylor' PI novels, set in Galway, are some of the darkest books I've ever read - only halfway through the series and can't see how he can get any 'noirer'!
read a couple of the standalones - 'the hackman blues' was very good. dark and horrible!
really enjoyed the film version of 'london boulevard' but didn't enjoy the film of 'blitz' at all...
