(And you deserved better than to be exploited in this awful new horror comic antho series)

John Gilbert posted a comment on the BFS site a couple of years ago, mentioning that he was trying to get a tribute project to Fear going. I think it might have been an anthology of stories published in the magazine, alongside comments and recollections of how Fear inspired many fledging writers, who are now established.
Looks like it never happened, which is a shame. I enjoyed the magazine at the time, although I think I'm missing a few of the later editions. When I look back at it now, I find far more of interest in there, more than I did at the time. That's probably because my knowledge of the genre has increased over the years, although I have to say Fear helped grow that knowledge. Fear broadened my awareness of writers, in a time when I only read Guy N Smith, Ramsey Campbell, and Stephen King.

Showing my age here but I seem to recall nearly getting a story in Fear. I had some long talks with the editor of the first edition (this could be eight pints of Guiness talking) Can I ask how many it ran to?

@ killercrab The contest win was Chris Moore´s original artwork for the cover of The Barsoom Project by Niven/Barnes. (Which looks rather generic if you ask me, one of those future cities. Shouldn´t it have been naked girls fighting aginst four armed green giants or something?) This contest was held at the launch of their new af/fantasy/horrolist - in hardcover? 5 questions. 1: Which Pan title is set in a futirustic dream park? 2: To which book is Star Scroll the sequel? 3: Who was the first editor of the Pan Book of Horror Stories? 4: What is the title of Dan McGirit´s humurous first novel? 5: Name the award-winning comics author whose debut novel is published by Pan in April. Hm, rather difficult for that kind of thing. Normalley they just ask such inane questions like who is the publisher of the Pan book of Stories? @craig Herbertson The last issue I have is Fear 32 from August 91. I really don´t remember if I didn´t continue the susbs or if it was cancelled.

Be nice to think that Mr Gilbert was passing some time on the internet some day and he hit upon this thread and in particular those lines, surely the biggest compliment you can pay an editor. Can't believe i didn't bother with the Black Arts special - was there a Wheatley article in there? - although it could be that the Vampire issue put me off. I mean, nearly two pages wasted on that ghastly, self-serving old publicity vulture from the Count Dracula Fan Club ....

This thread brings back some memories. Back in the 80s I'd subscribed to Interzone in the vain hope that I might be able to get a story published in it - it was the only genre mag I knew of at the time. But the damn thing was always full of SF - not much horror in there at all. I knew I could never write the kind of stuff they wanted. Then I chanced across Fear in a local newsagent - much more my kind of thing! Of course, I never got a story published there either - at that time my dreams of getting anything published were very much "pie in the sky" - but it was a much more enjoyable magazine! ;D And wasn't there another glossy one around at about the same time called Skeleton Crew? I seem to remember picking up a copy or two of those too. Or I may be getting confused as I worked with somebody at around that time who was going out with a fella who was in a band called Skeleton Crew. Sad fact that when we moved house 12 years ago I was at the stage of getting fed up of packing boxes and boxes full of stuff - and I threw out all my old Fear mags, etc! I do so regret doing that now.

you are not alone, caroline! how many times have i written 'i used to have this book...' and regretted its going. but at one time i moved three times in two years, and lots of stuff got shed along the way. lots more went just because i got fed up with the clutter.
frankly, some of it has been bought again. you will, too... you know you will...

I think it was a bit easier than that to get hold of. I managed to buy every single issue published, mostly from WH Smiths in Preston, who seemed to stock it well in this neck of the woods. Word at the time was that the failure of Frighteners was what brought about the collapse of the publishers, and Fear with it, though whether that's true I have no way of veryfying. David I used to get it in Nelson! I loved this magazine - good, in depth reviews and articles. I can't stand the glossy stuff filled with photos.

Still got every issue of FEAR. The first issue was good but it was'nt till issue 2 when I really got excited about the mag as it had Herbert and Hutson interviews inside Oliver Frey I believe painted those stunning covers. Sadly Darkside seemed to kill off FEAR . Shame really as Darkside is still running today . ( Got all them too. Oh and Samhain )

As most fell afoul of ph*t*fu*k, here are the first three issues.
No. 1 was July/August 1988. I can't believe this is thirty years ago. Maybe time for an appreciation.

Hi Andy. Have just replaced some of the missing scans on the first page, but still too many gaps. Didn't John Gilbert revive Fear a few years back circa the Zombie Apocalypse books?
