Best FCon I've been to by a long way.
Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who came to the reading and made it a 'standing room only' event - it really meant a lot and just made me go even more over the top in my Jackanory Horror sort of way.
Good to meet vault regulars like Troo & meet again the inimitable Dr Terror who truly is the new Herbert van Thal and should have bloody won the BFS award for Black Book.
Caroline - I'm really sorry you couldn;t make it. For you here is a potted list of some of my own memorable moments:
Ramsey politely making a suggestion about doing something to Sarah Pinborough with a rope after winning his award.
Joel Lane winning his award.
Joel Lane's reading.
Reggie Oliver's marvellous rendition of 'The Wig'
Gary McMahon telling me he loved me over and over and over again
Gary McMahon kissing Conrad Williams
Gary McMahon & Gary Greenwood's new naked wrestling ad campaign for Anchor spreadable butter
Ian Watson & Steve Volk's interpretive dance for the non-fiction award that felt like one of those awful Eurovision song contest intermission things.
Getting stuck in that fucking lift. I suggested we do Vault of Horror & tell stories but Pete Crowther was more interested in who was going to be eaten first.

Groan. I just knew Mammoth Best Horror #18 would win. Fair play, there are some cracking terror tales in that one but Black Book pisses all over it as a collection of all-out horror stories. But very well done for making the final cut with your first book, Charles! I'm Glad that Chris Fowler's Old Devil Moon won best collection. A great bunch of stories from a very decent fellow. And he's a big fan of vintage anthologies, too! Thanks for the report, John, doubly so as you've not scrimped on the all-important salacious gossip. Now: are their any good sleazy unsubstantiated rumours doing the rounds?

Sorry didn't see you Caroline - hope you are better soon. Loved the reading John! Sorry about the curry Charles and not getting an award but congrats to being short listed! -I was a little worried about Steve's health (although he ineed was fine during the weekend)and that he was exhausted so hence making sure he had plenty of time to get back for the awards ceremony.
I'm happy that Bull Running sold well and thank you to all who bought.

Oh my dear Dem - if it's sleazy and unsubstantiated you want how about:
The lovely young lady in the copper coloured gown who said she wanted to lick me all over prior to the William Hope Hodgson panel!
The amazing groaning noises coming from the room next to mine - and who I eventually discovered they were due to!
The well-known publisher involved in erotic poetry!
The soap opera I was offered a job on the writing staff of!
The person who confessed they liked reading all that teenage fantasy bollocks!
(Is this starting to look like the back cover of the Pan Book of FantasyCon?)

I had a jolly good Fcon too.
All the copies of my new PS collection Glyphotech and Other Macabre Processes sold within fifteen minutes of them coming out of the box at the launch, which was cool.
Very nice to meet Charles for the first time, and get my copies of The Black Book signed.
I thought all the readings I attended (Gary Mc's, JLP's, Joel's and Reggie's) on the 10th Floor were marvellous.
But I especially enjoyed the readings on the 13th Floor. The ones by Charles Birkin, Robert Aickman, L.A. Lewis etc etc. Very good indeed. Quite cold up there though. And there was a mouldy, tomb-like smell to the shadowy room in which they took place...
Roll on Fcon 2009, and roll on the World Horror Convention in Brighton in 2010 !

Steve hadn't won Best Anthology for a few years, but a book that's available in the shops is always going to stand a good chance of having more readers and votes.
Anyway, he even mentioned me in his acceptance speech, and he signed my copy of BNH to 'a worthwhile rival'.

Thanks Ally. For those of you who don't know I'm not a curry fan but whenever I've been with friends for one in the past there's always been another option. Not this time. I managed to stomach enough of some sort of chicken/tomato concoction to assuage my hunger. And then after the awards I had a Chinese. So say nothing when you hear news reports about the disappearance of one Li Wing-fu...
Oh, and congratulations on selling all your books - well done!

Oh, it sounds wonderful! I'm so sorry to have missed it! Ramsey politely making a suggestion about doing something to Sarah Pinborough with a rope after winning his award. Getting stuck in that f**k**g lift. I suggested we do Vault of Horror & tell stories but Pete Crowther was more interested in who was going to be eaten first. Te-he. Funnily enough, I found myself in the lift with Ramsey last year and the thought crossed my mind at the time that that would not be a good time for the lift to break down. I've always had a bit of a phobia about lifts - and getting stuck in one with a horror writer must be quite an experience! And I bet you're not going to tell us, are you John?! Sorry that neither Charles nor Des got the Best Anthology Award. Personally, I wanted to see a dead heat between the two of you! Glad Ramsey got the Best Novel Award though. I feared Joe Hill might just pip him to the post, but "The Grin of the Dark" really is superb so I was hoping that'd get it.

Gosh! You're dead good at the gossipy stuff, Lord P! Uh, "lick me all over prior to the William Hope Hodgson panel"? Is that some kind of scandalous euphemism that has escaped me until now? The Criswell the Psychic in me can safely predict that at least one Vault regular will pick up a BFS award in 2009. Mark, Charles, Ally - glad you all enjoyed yourselves and comisserations to Caroline. That really was wretched luck!

Commiserations on not winning, Charles and Des. Better luck next time.
It was great to meet people - Ally Bird, Charles Black, John Probert, Mark Samuels, Troo Topham, etc.
My second Fcon, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I only managed to make it to the readings by Gary McMahon, Tony Richard, Chris Fowler, and Joel Lane, but there were all brilliant.
I managed to pick up some cracking books -
Bull Running For Girls - Ally Bird How to Make Monsters - Gary McMahon Coffin Nails - John L Probert Naming of Parts - Tim Lebbon Beneath the Surface - Simon Strantzas Glyphotech - Mark Samuels The Reach of Children - Tim Lebbon The Monster Club - R Chetwynd-Hayes (used) The Enigma of Departure - Nicholas Royle Changing of Faces - Tim Lebbon Rough Cut - Gary McMahon The Reef - Mark Charon Newton At the Molehills of Madness - Rhys Hughes We Fade to Grey - ed Gary McMahon Islington Crocodiles - Paul Meloy Kepple - R Chetwynd-Hayes (used) Alison - Andrew Humphrey The Hiss of Escaping Air - Christopher Golden Other Voices - Andrew Humphrey The Mountain King - Rick Hautala (used) Best New Horror 19 - ed Stephen Jones The Second Humdrumming Book of Horror Stories - ed I A Martin
Quite a bit of reading to add to my already mountainous TBR pile.
I'll start saving for next year.

Well, despite not winning and the curry I enjoyed myself. It was great to meet up with everyone from the Vault who attended. And many others.
Highlights included the readings by Reggie Oliver and John. Actually performances is a better word than readings.
After taking 20 last year and selling 3, I only took 10 books to sell this time and all but 1 went. ;D

Did anyone see anything about Houses on the Borderland, which is being published by the BFS and was supposed to be launched at the convention. So far I haven't seen any mention of this happening, though it was scheduled on the convention program.

David I spoke to Martin before he went, and he said that he had just received the copies and that he was packing them to take to the event, so I presume it went ahead.
