Try me with a story - but the competition will be stiff, especially from those eligible to submit. well, as you reviewed an anthology I put together and even wrote a piece for, I was kinda hoping I would be elegible... Not strictly.(BTW, I wrote a piece for BFTD??)

Well, I think it must be of some interest - otherwise you wouldn't have been approached recently as you say you were. I meant to say, of interest to reasonable people. It is a given that people will do research on all sorts of unimportant things. Also, it is possible to have somewhat ambivalent feelings about having been a child prodigy of sorts, in however minor a way---something you yourself might even know something about. The point I originally wanted to make was just that I can easily see why Mr Temperley might not want to put "Kowlongo Plaything" on his CV, or even be reminded of its existence. (Here I am, of course, imagining the conversation, as we were given no details.)

This is the hundred dollar question. (I'm completely pissed which might explain the following) Beatles or Stones? Unquestionably the Beatles produced astounding pop music. However the Stones produced astounding rock. The Beatles said their earlier pop efforts were pish, The Stones just always did what they did without judgments. I like the Beatles early pop music because it was fun and cheap and trashy. They didn't. In a similar way. the judgment of the public might be that your early stuff, Jojo, which may be in your own estimation, crap, might well be in the estimation of others rather good crap.

Actually, I've just been looking through my correspondence with August Derleth, which S. T. Joshi is editing for publication. I find much of what I wrote to Derleth (which I haven't seen since I sent it all those years ago) horribly embarrassing, but I won't be suppressing it, however tempted I admittedly am. I might annotate it or at least put it in context, though (the context being that I was quite a shit).

It's a shame that Back from the Dead now goes for silly money now - am thinking about releasing the PDF version for people to download... Forget the pdf. Knock BTFD out as a fat paperback: it should do very well. Another thing, Johnny...Were you thinking of submitting your Cliniic sequel to Weirdmonger? That's an interesting prospect!

Nah - The Clinic Sequel would hopefully go in a new Pan Horror book under the name of Alex White...

Nah - The Clinic Sequel would hopefully go in a new Pan Horror book under the name of Alex White... Sounds reasonable to me. You're following on in true Pan tradition. Bertie would have been proud of you...

Coming to a Pan Horror near you soon?

Coming back home Dr Joubert and Madame Joubert see the police outside their house and make good their escape - and Ellen is made a ward of the state, and through her primitive way of communicating is finally able to reveal the heartbreaking story of what happened to her.
Ellen is treated like royalty and becomes France's latest cause célèbre, while the authorities hunt down the Jouberts. But its the daughter Thérèse, the heir to The Clinic who has the most to hide and fear from her parents getting captured and she will do anything to protect the empire she has built up since her father retired...

I just read PBOH 23 and it wasn't bad.
1. The Sleeping Prince - A well-written tale and the ending....OUCH!
2. Dengue Fever - So-so story, but the ending was a bit OITI?
3. You Can't Be Too Careful - Not bad, but the ending seemed to be a bit of a cop out.
4. A Rhyme - I skipped it.
5. Fat Old Women Who Wear Fur Coats - Not bad, but the ending was a bit underwhelming.
6. Daughter of the House - Good story and the ending was so-so.
7. Dr. Dichter and the Terminal Cosmetic - The story seemed a bit cliched to me. It could have been more gruesome.
8. Foster Parents - I thought the story was a bit boring.
9. A Backwards Shadow - A decent story.
10. Chances Govern All - I didn't like the story that much.
11. The Dogs - Well-written, but not horrifying.
12. Rightfully Mine - Well-written tale.
13. Kowlongo Plaything - I can see why this story is so infamous! Yikes at the ending.

13. Kowlongo Plaything - I can see why this story is so infamous! Yikes at the ending. It's been a few years since I read 23, and while Dengue Fever and The Dogs worked for me, nothing, but nothing, sticks like Kowlongo Plaything. It kills everything else in the collection stone dead!
